SCHOOL AFFAIRS

MEETING OF COMMITTEE

gna, (“Times-Age” Special.) ‘ ’ The first meeting of the newly-elect-\id school committee was held last evening, when Mr H. J. McKenzie presided. There were also present: Messrs A. G. Rabbits, J. Finn (treasurer), B. E. Clarke, P. L. Beere, Geo. Stark, C. K. Goodin, W. E. Knowles (secretary), and the headmaster, Mr W. Martin. The chairman welcomed the new member on the committee, Mr Stark. He said that he hoped Mr Stark would enjoy school committee work. The chairman also extended a welcome to those members who had been returned again. He said he felt sure the happy atmosphere which had previously existed would continue and that all would work for the advancement of the school generally. . He also referred in eulogistic terms to the work done by Mr Stevens and the services rendered by Mr W. S. King, who did not seek re-election. The treasurer reported that the school funds were in credit to the amount of £B9 9s 7d. Accounts amounting to £2O 13s lid were passed for payment. The headmaster reported that since the last meeting a Home and Schools’ Association had been formed and that the initial meeting had been a very enthusiastic one. A committee had been set up to organise functions for the benefit of the school and it was thought an official representative from the school committee should be added to the executive. Mr G. Stark was appointed the school representative. It ■ was mentioned meetings would be held monthly and that the next one would be called for early in June. It was resolved that the Home and Schools’ Association be given the use of the school for suitable functions free of charge. It was resolved that application be made to the Education Board for a grant for heating purposes, also that a letter be forwarded to the Board and the member for the district, Mr B. Roberts, asking that the erection of the new school be pushed on with as quickly as possible, and to point out the necessity for the provision of a school cycle shed. The Wairarapa Rugby Football Union is to be asked to supply two footballs for the south-end schools. SALVATION ARMY BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS. . 1 The Carterton Corps of the Salvation Army celebrated the 49th anniversary of its foundation in Carterton by holding services in the Army Hall on Saturday, with Sunday services in the King's Theatre. Last evening the following programme supplied mainly by the children of Whatman Home, was presented to a fair audience at the King’s Theatre:— Company song. “Travel along in the Sunshine;” prayer song; scripture recitation; tambourine song, small children; recitation; flag drill, senior girls; xylophone solo, Sergeant S. Mason” Dream Man’s Train, small girls; solo, Mrs M. W. Worsfold; Day of the Week, girls; mouth organ’ selection, boys; company song, “In the Morning of Life;” prodigal’s story, intermediate children; concertina solo, Captain O. Ojala; Father’s Care, trio; rythmic drill, girls; Sons of the Sea, boys; sketch, “Knowledge becometh a Preacher,” Tom, Dick and Harry; The Rainbow, girls; pyramids, boys; xylophone solo, Sergeant S. Mason; Round the Clock, girls and boys, solo, Mrs M. W. Worsfold; mouth organ selection, boys; verse speaking, girls and boys; company song, “Soldiers of Christ.” ORDER OF DRUIDS TOTARA LODGE MEETING. The fortnightly meeting of Totara Lodge of Druids was held last evening. A.D? Bro 11. Murrell presiding. Bros I. A. Me. Bond and W. S. Montgomery of the second echelon forwarded the necessary particualrs requirecl by the Grand Lodge from members going on active service. Correspondence was received from Grand Lodge stating that a favourable ballot was recorded on the proposal to transfer £24,000 from the Sick and Funeral surplus to create a soldiers fund to pay the contributions of members while on active service overseas. Sub-committees were appointed in connection with the annual ball, and it was decided that a combined meeting of ladies and men be held on Friday next at 7.30 o’clock in the Foresters’ Hall. Bro Cliff Abbott, of Dalefield, notified he would be entering Hanmer Springs Hospital shortly for treatment. Sick pay and accounts amounting to £3G 15s 8d were passed for payment. At the next Lodge night (May 20) there will be held the half-yearly meeting when the election of officers will take place. PIPE BAND ENJOYABLE INGLESIDE. There was a large and happy gathering of residents from town and country present at the Masonic Hall, last evening when the ladies’ committee of the Wairarapa Pipe Band held another of their' inglesidcs in aid of the Pipe Band uniform. The music for the dancing was played by Mrs Rogers (Dalefield), and Mr Ray Hall was M.C. The following programme was rendered: —Item. Wairarapa Pipe Band: song, Mr A. Kay (who accompanied himself on the guitar and was encored three times); song. Mr D. Irwin (encored); Scotch songs. Misses B„ C. and A. Fisher; quartette. Misses Williams.

Goodin, McKenzie, and Fisher; tap dance, Miss While; Scotch dances, Mrs Ray Hall; piano accordeon items, Master Knowles, of Christchurch; violin solo, Mr Knowles (Greytown). The supper dance was played by Miss. Jean Hall. Mr Thos S. Arcus announced the various concert items and thanked those present for their patronage. He said that the ladies’ committee had decided to hold inglesidcs periodically throughout the winter months. Supper was handed round and a pleasant gathering was brought to a close after mdinight. There will be. no election for officers but there are 26 nominations for the committee and 24 vacancies (23 for 2 years and 1 for 1 year. An election will be held on Saturday, May 11. at 10.30 a.m. at the Society’s Office, Memorial Square, Carterton. Personal Items. Mr and Mrs K. G. Whitlow, of Christchurch, are staying with Mr and Mrs F. O’Keefe, Carterton. Mr D. J. McPherson, son of Mr and Mrs W. McPherson, of Victoria Street. Carterton, left yesterday for Weraroa, where he will undergo training as a groundsman in the Air Force. He will afterwards go to the aerodrome at Bulls. Keep Fit Class. As there was a special meeting of the Women’s Institutes in Carterton last Wednesday, it was not possible to have the usual keep fit class under the leadership of Miss N. Thomson, of the Physical Welfare and Recreation Branch. However, the institute ve*y kindly asked Miss Thomson to speak to the ladies present,.thus placing matters before them concerning the keep fit class. Miss Thomson also mentioned the campaign to gain wider participation in recreation by women, by women playing bowls. This may seem a fairly revolutionary measure to some but it is interesting to note that there are at least 300 women bowlers in the North Island alone. Ladies who are interested in bowls are asked to get in touch with Miss Thomson or Miss Berrill. Bicycle Stalls at School. Tenders are elsewhere invited by the Wellington Education Board for the erection of bicycle stalls at the Carterton District High School. Plans and specifications may be seen at the “Times-Age" Office. Baby Carnival. The baby carnival which is being held under the auspices of the St John Ambulance will be brought to a conclusion tomorrow evening at the Regent Theatre. On Thursday the coronation of the successful baby will be performed by the lady mayoress, Mrs D. L. Taverner.
