GOOD SPORT

DUCK SHOOTING IN LAKE AREA. MANY SPORTSMEN SPARE THE PUKEKO. Some good sport was enjoyed in the Kahautara district on the opening days of the shooting season. A party of two secured 52 ducks in three days. All the ducks shot were grey, except three mallard. The birds flew very high on Saturday, but on Sunday they decoyed very well and with the southerly weather a lot of birds were seen on the lagoons around the lake, more, in the experience of one shooter, than for many years past. At Pirinoa on the opening day a party of three secured 30 ducks and Ihe limit in black swans. No big bags were reported in the Tauherenikau area, the average for the two opening days being about 10 ducks. Inquiries made among 14 shooters showed that not one had fired a shot at a pukeko. In the opinion of some sportsmen, ammunition is too dear to waste on the pukeko.
