CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE AND COURSE A Spectacular Start I CLARION CALL AND STEEPLECHASING (BY “THE GRAFTER.”; Clarion Call has started off steeptiechasing again in a spectacular manner as he made light of his 11.10 in the Egmont Steeplechase, winning by ten lengths. It was his sedond success in the race as he also won two years ago, and while he was only opposed by a moderate lot his form suggests that he will be difficlt to beat in both the Great Northern Hurdles and Steeplechase. There is no questioning the fact that Clarion Call is one of the two best all-round jumpers in the country, the other being Padishah, and possibly with the idea of dodging a meeting between the pair Clarion Call may win a share of the feature races early. Padishah is being prepared for another trip to Riccarton. and if Clarion Call is also on the scene at that time more than the usual interest will centre round the Grand Nationals. Clarion Call won the National Steeplechase in 1938 under 11.1. but was beaten into third place by Padishah and Fireguard in the National Hurdles carrying 11.3. Padishah won both races last winter carrying 11.5 in the steeplechase and 11.7 in the hurdles.
