ABORTIVE EFFORT

GERMAN RAID IN SAAR REGION MADE ON CONSIDERABLE SCALE. EFFICIENCY OF DEFENCE DEMONSTRATED. By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright. (Received This Dav, 11.55 n.m.) PARIS, May 5. A War Ministry spokesman emphasised the importance of the Gorman raid in the Saar Region (reported in an earlier message). The enemy attacked outposts near the Elies River, covering the approach to the central Saar section of the Maginot Line. After heavy artillery preparation, more than GOO Germans advanced on a milelong front, but French artillery and machine-gun crossfire halted the raiders. French scouts found abandoned arms and bloodstained uniforms, indicating a disorderly retirement. The Germans removed their dead under cover of darkness. The failure of the raid proved the solidity of the French positions.
