SHOOTING SEASON
GOOD BAGS OF DUCKS & SWANS.
ALLEGED OFFENDERS CAUGHT BY RANGERS.
Few detailed reports are yet to hand concerning the opening of-' the shooting season in the Wairarapa district. Good bags are said to have been obtained, especially of swans. Many shooters secured the limit of three swans on Saturday, but ducks were not so easy to bring down, though on the opening day they did not fly as high as had been expected. Yesterday, however, they were flying higher than was normally the case.
Although the pukeko is included in the shooting list, many sportsmen refrain from interfering with this bird, as it becomes so tame that in many localities it is only murder to shoot it. A favourite haunt of the pukeko is near the Waiohine Bridge, where birds can usually be seen feeding within a few yards of the road, oblivious of the traffic continually passing along the highway. Yesterday morning, the peace of the birds inhabiting this area was rudely disturbed when three or four men ai.ghted from a car and opened fire.
It is understood that rangers apprehended two men in the Westmere district who are alleged to have been, shooting without a licence. The rangers are said to have seized their guns and bag of ducks.
