BIBLE SOCIETY
UPPER PLAIN BRANCH. A SUCCESSFUL MEETING. (“Times-Age" Special.) The first of a series of Masterton branch meetings was held on Friday last by the Upper Plain branch of the British and Foreign Bible Society. Mrs. A. T. Thompson kindly lent her. drawing-room for the occasion, and a large number of ladies were present. The meeting* opened with a hymn and a reading from the Book of Proverbs given by Miss L. McGregor, followed by a’prayer by Miss M. McGregor.
The speaker for the afternoon. Mrs. Violet Wakelin, was then welcomed, and gave an address on the general work of the society. As organising secretary paying her annual visit, it was a pleasure, she said, to meet again friends of a previous year, and it was also very gratifying to find new faces amongst her audience. In addition to the work of the past year and the distribution of God's word throughout the world in the languages of all peoples, she wished to emphasise the task which new confronted the society, as one of the consequences of the world war. The spiritual needs of the troops being equally important as their physical welfare, it behoved supporters of the Bible Society to be as active in their sphere as were the workers for the Red Cross. Mrs. Wakelin showed samples of the Testaments (in their various colours), containg the King's message to his troops, and drew her hearers’ attention to the. necessity for greater efforts this year to meet this additional expense.
A- vote of thanks was passed to Mrs. A. T. Thompson for her hospitality, and to Mrs. J. W. Perry (secretary), for her efforts to make the meeting the success it was. The serving of, afternoon tea brought proceedings to a close.
