RACING CLUB MEETING OF STEWARDS. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Carterton Racing Club was held in the P. and A. Society’s board room last evening. Mr W. Howard Booth presiding. There were also present Messrs L. H. Smart, W. C. Deller. J. Johnston, P. Bain, E. J. Matson. J. C. Harp. P. A. Cole, G. A. Vincent and H. J. Brown. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs' Geo Eaton. A. O. Abbott, V. L. Robinson, R. G. Kemble, and C. Jensen. The treasurer reported a dr balance at the Bank of New Zealand oi £1713 16s 4d. The receipts since last meeting amounted to £286 16s 4d. The secretary of the Racing Conference (Mr Mcßeth), wrote notifying the club that the annual conference would be held in Wellington, on Friday, July 4. A letter was received from the secretary of the Racing Conference relative to an extra day’s racing for the Carterton Club. It was pointed out that all the Saturdays were taken up with race meetings, and there was not a day suitable for Carterton. It was decided to thank the executive for the opportunity offered. The secretary reported that the caretaker was again at work after having undergone a successful operation.
ST. MARK’S LADIES’ GUILD SUCCESSFUL SALE. The St Mark’s Anglican Guild held a sale of work, produce, cakes, flowers, etc, yesterday. Under the guidance of Mrs L. J. Harding as secretary, everything went off smoothly and the ladies are very pleased with the patronage accorded them by .the public. The takings at the respective stalls were as follow: Refreshment £ 12, produce £B, garden £6, bargain £7, cakes £3, apron £3. The total takings were £4l, and as a result the church funds have materially benefited. Personal Items. ■ Miss Hitchings, domestic science teacher for the South Wairarapa schools, has left to spend the term vacation at Christchurch. Miss Mary Lawrence, of Park Road, Carterton is visiting Wellington and attended the Marsden Old Girls’ Ball last evening. Miss Lawrence is the guest of her aunt, Mrs Gibson, of Ka_ro.ri. • /w \Mr and Mrs S. Borman, who have been visiting relatives in the South Island, have returned to Carterton. Mr Jas M. Nicholls, of Richmond Road, left by rail var for Wellington this morning, and upon arrival in the city will travel by air to Christchurch. Mr Arnold R. Wallis, well known in Carterton, and who for over 50 years followed the occupation' of a building contractor, celebrated his 94th birthday on Monday last. He is still hale and hearty, and is staying with his son Mr R. N. Wallis, at Palmerston North. The wedding took place at the Church of Christ, Palmerston North, last Saturday, of Hudson, second son of Mr D. B. Wallis, and Ethel Mildred Alethea, daughters of Mr and Mrs A. J. Wood, of Reid’s Lane, Bunnythorpe. A reception was afterwards held at the P.D.C. tea rooms. Mi’ Hudson Wallis is an old pupil of the Carterton District High School. Baby Carnival. The positions of the leading candidates in the Baby Carnival contest are as follow: No 12, 1090, No 24, 975; No 51. 727; No 11. 672; No 6. 614; No 32. 345: No 38. 326; No 15, 300; No 13, 278; No 20, 247. Miniature Rifle Club. The secretary of the Carterton Miniature Rifle Club has been notified by Messrs Witcombe and Caldwell, Wellington, that the firm had forwarded a miniature cup for competition. The trophy has been accepted with thanks. Pipe Band. Members of the Wairarapa Pipe Band played a much appreciated programme of Scottish music in Carterton last evening. On Monday evening the ladies’ committee will hold an Ingleside in the Masonic Hall for the purpose of raising funds to purchase uniforms for the band. As the project is a worthy one. it is hoped the public will show their appreciation of the band’s activities by attending in large numbers. Secondary School Social.
Prior to the school breaking up for the term holiday a very enjoyable social was held at the South Carterton School by the teachers and pupils.
Bound for the Exhibition. The excursion train to Wellington today picked up 70 passengers at Carterton all bound for the Exhibition. Besides the railway excursionists dozens travelled by road.
