COMPETITION WINNERS.

Al the monthly meeting of the Car ?- *lerton Women’s Institute the compe titions resulted as follows: —Bowl o. flowers: Mrs Rooney 1. Mittens: Mr: G. StefTert 1. These were judged bj Mrs B. Renall, who was accorded t hearty vote of thanks and presentee with a shoulder spray. Members of the Parkvale Institute were present by invitation. The speaker for the afternoon was Miss Hazel Johnston, of Massey College, the holder of the Sarah Ann Rhodes Scholarship. Her subject was "Food Conservation.” The address was very interesting. At the conclusion the speaker was thanked by the president and presented with a shoulder spray. Miss Noeline M. Thompson, the Area Recreation Officer of the Department of Physical Welfare and Recreation spoke on the aims of the department, and asked for the co-opera-tion of the members in the matter of forming classes for the object of keeping fit. Mrs E. M. Gayfer was appointed delegate to represent the Institute at the general conference to be held in Wellington ’ Q July next. MINIATURE RIFLES ANNUAL MEETING OF ASSOCIATION. The annual meeting of the Waiirarapa Miniature Rifles Association will be held at Carterton tomorrow night. The annual report and balance sheet will be submitted, arrangements for the current season discussed, and the election of officers take place. Rugby Football. The Carterton seniors to play Red Star at Carterton tomorrow will be:— C. Jensen, M. Hurley, C. Deller, D. Taylor, G. Brown, E. Thompson, Mahupuku, F. Fitzgerald, J. Tilyard, P. McPhee, D. Smith, J. Blake, T. Geange, D. Alexander, J. Johnston, H. Mathieson, Inder, Tunnicliffe. The Carterton juniors will be represented against Masterton juniors at Masterton tomorrow by the following: A. Olive, B. The Carterton third grade team to play Masterton at Memorial Park, Masterton, on Saturday at 1.30 o’clock will be as follows: —Corlet, Desmond, Geange (2), McGuinness, Evans, Braggins (2), Uatt, Spooner, Pinfold, Johnston, Morris, Sewell, Goodin, O’Keefe. Basketball. The following players will represent the Belvedere Basketball Club in a match against the Collegians at Masterton on Saturday:—Goal throwers, Joyce Benge, Joyce Nielsen, Nola James; Centres, Eileen Garrett, Daphne Sewell, Marjorie Hedley; defence, Joyce Goodin, Margaret Clarke, Kathleen McKenna; emergency, Madge Green. Church Services. Services will be held at St Marks Church, on Sunday, at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m., and at Ponatahi at 2 p.m. The Rev W. F. Stent will be the preacher. Personal. Mr and Mrs W. Lorenzen, of Raglan, are visiting Carterton, and are staying with Mrs Lorenzen, snr. Messrs J. Manley and R. O’Keefe, of Carterton, have received notice that they both have passed their examinations for the Air Force. Mr W. Ballinger, who was mentioned in this column recently was not Mr Ballinger, of Carterton. Centennial Exhibition. During the week large numbers of Carterton residents have visited the Centennial Exhibition. The special train tomorrow will doubtless be well patronised.
Entertaining Soldiers. A meeting of the Carterton committee which was appointed to entertain soldiers was held in the Borough Council Chambers, last evening. Mr. J. A. B. Lawrence presided in the absence of the mayor. There were also present Messrs. Geo. Brown, Gibb. Johnston, A. T. Murray, B. H. Gayfer, H. Kiernan. W. A. Hart; Mesdames L. Fairb’rother, J. L. Murray, E. M. Gayfer, R. P. Wakelin, P. Beere. Accounts amounting to £l2 12s. lOd. were submitted and passed -for payment. It was resolved that local members of the Third Echelon be tendered a social and dance, and that the Carterton Savage Club be asked to organise Die concert programme. Baby Carnival. The positions of the leading candidates in connection with the baby carnival are as follows: —No. 12. 989; No. 24, 953; No. 51 718: No. 6. GO9; No. 11. 585; No. 32, 345; No. 15. 297; No. 13. 275; No. 38, 212: No. 20. 226. • Shooting Season. Large numbers of shooting enthusiasts left Carterton this morning en route to the Wairarapa Lake in readiness for the opening of the game bird shooting tomorrow. Mischievious Children. On Wednesday last three children who are under the charge of the child welfare officer in a neighbouring town got away from their home and, stealing bicycles, made off for Carterton. After wandering round the town they went into Pembroke Street, where they are alleged to have broken a window in Mr. H. Hughan's home. From there they went to Mr. J. J. Hadley's home, breaking five large windows there. The welfare officer later located them | in Carterton and took charge of them. I
