BRITISH BY-ELECTIONS
PROOFS OF NATIONAL RESOLUTION
READINESS TO GIVE ALL FOR VICTORY.
JOURNEY THAT CANNOT BE EASY.
(British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 9.40 a.m.) RUGBY, May 2.
Commenting on the fact that the candidate who advocated a vigorous and determined prosecution ot the war polled practically all the votes cast in the Pollock (Glasgow) by-elec-tion, while his opponent, who advocated a peace which today' could only mean surrender received a mere handful of votes. “The Times” says: “The spirit seen at by-elections, and indeed in all events which can be said to be an indication of public opinion, will certainly be proof against any setbacks on the road to victory. For that journey will not be easy. If there had been any chance of a speedy and spectacular victory for us, Hitler would never have gone to war. None of the men who in history have been the scourges ot the world has ever been less chivalrous or more redoubtable. The Germans can only be defeated by an organisation more efficient, a production greater and a force stronger than their own. The by-elections show how ready the people are to give of their best and utmost in a cause which they understand.”
