NEW ZEALAND BUTTER
RETAIL PRICE IN BRITAIN DEFENDED BY MINISTRY OF FOOD. FREIGHT & OTHER COSTS. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received This Day. 12.20 p.m.) LONDON. May 1. An official of the Ministry of Food, interviewed by the Australian Associated Press regarding criticism of the high retail price of butter in the United Kingdom, claimed that it was misleading to compare the New Zealand f.o.b. price of 112 s 6d per cwt with the issue price of 143 s without bearing in mind that New Zealand and Australia would have been obliged to bear the cost of insurance, freight and selling charges. Under peace time conditions, therefore, it was improbable that the butter could have been sold at 112 s 6d. New Zealand butter could be retailed in the United Kingdom at present under 18d a pound. The difference of a penny between that and the present maximum price was fully justified by war time cost. However, the Ministry of Food was giving the closest attention to the possibility of reducing costs of storage and distribution, with a view to reducing the retail price. The Food Ministry official undertook to investigate the intensive propaganda for margarine and its possible ill effect on public interest in butter. -
