CEASING PUBLICATION

“WAIRARAPA DAILY' NEWS” OF CARTERTON. END OF LONG CAREER. The “Wairarapa Daily News”, after serving the public of Carterton and district over a long period years, will cease publication as from May 31. The paper was originally established as the “Wairarapa Observer” by Mr C. G. Beckett, who some years later sold it to the late Mr A. Kent Johnston. Shortly afterwards the paper fell into the hands of Mr W. McKenzie, who at one time was connected with the “Wairarapa Daily Times” in Masterton. Mr McKenzie successfully conducted the paper for some years and then disposed of it to Messrs James Brown and G. G. Taylor. Mr W. F. Roydhouse became the next owner. It was then that the "Wairarapa Leader," edited by the late Mr J. T. M. Hornsby, who later became member for Wairarapa. was established. A period of opposition was followed by the amalgamation of the two papers, the name of the new publication being the “Wairarapa Daily News.” In subsequent years the papef 1 became the property of Messrs Roydhouse and Son and since the death of Mr Roydhouse, Senr, has been conducted by Mr R. W. Roydhouse. Three of those who served their apprenticeship on the “Observer" about 1888 still reside in Carterton. They are Messrs C. J. DeLacey (who is still connected with newspaper work), Jas F. Wallis (who until recent years was a member of the Greytown “Standard” staff), and Mr W. Sunnex, who severed his connection with the trade many years ago, to take up farming. Mr Hector M. J. Nicolson, manager of the “Otaki Mail” and Mr N. J. Bennington, of Masterton, were also members of the “Observer” staff. . Mr E. J. Brown, manager of the "Times-Age” was also on the "Observer” staff when his father owned the paper. The “Observer” was first published on coloured paper as a single sheet.
