CARTERTON COUNCIL MEETING LAST NIGHT. THE STRAY DOG NUISANCE. i"Times-Age" Special.) The monthly meeting of the Carterton Borough Council was held in th;: Borough Chambers last night. The mayor (Mr. Taverner) presided, and there were also present Crs. O. W. Wol - ters. H. Mortenson. C. J. DeLacy. W. A. Hart. E. McKenzie. L. M. Clark. Apologies were received from Crs. Udy, Stevens and Copeland. The Commissioner of Transport wrote regarding control of traffic in the borough of Carterton. The clerk’s action in notifying the commissioner tha; £2O would be included in the estimates for this service next year, was confirmed. Mr: Roberts, M.P., wrote enclosing a copy of exemptions approved under the Patriotic Purposes Emegency Regulations. The mayor pointed out that there were definite restrictions on patriotic funds for entertaining members of forces going overseas, and that all money in this respect must be volun • tarily subscribed. Mr. Roberts was thanked for his letter. The clerk of the Wairarapa South County Council wrote complimenting the procession committee on the display made in the recent centennial celebrations. Mr. H. A. Trueman, building and sanitary inspector, forwarded his report for the past three months, which showed that during that period two cases of pulmonary tuberculosis ano one case of hydatids had occurred in the borough. The health condition ol the borough generally was quite satisfactory. The Wairarapa Automobile Association wrote asking if the council would consider adopting a by-law to the effect that vehicles be not parked closer than three feet to those in front and behind when the method of parking is parallel with the kerb. The council was sympathetic to the proposal, but considered that it would be difficult to enforce it.
The Carterton municipal silver band wrote enclosing its balance-sheet for the year ended March 31, showing a credit balance of £45. It was decided to increase subsidy to the band to £25.
It was decided that the application of the Carterton Fire Brigade to replace present water pipes into the fire station be granted. The treasure’s statement, showing a credit balance in the District Fund Account of £lB4B ss. 5d.. and a credit balance of £135 4s. 6d. to the Gasworks' Account, was adopted. Accounts amounting to approximately £546 in the District Fund and £272 in the Gasworks Fund were passed for payment. The reports of the works committee, overseer, gas committe and gas manager were adopted. Cr. DeLacy brought up the matter of straying dogs in the streets of the borough. Stray dogs, he said, were becoming a danger to motorists and other users of the roads. It was decided that the dog tax collector deal with the nuisance.
Miss Carney, of Wellington, waited upon the council, and placed before them figures and particulars of a free distribution of books. The speaker referred to what had been done in Motueka, Palmerston North and othei places. Miss Carney was thanked for the information she had given. „ It was decided that the matter be left to the library committee to go into and report to the next meeting of the council.
