FEATHERSTON

SCHOOL ASSOCIATION WORK OF DENTAL CLINIC. ("Times-Age” Special.) At the annual meeting of the Featherston Home and School Association the election of officers resulted as follows: Patron. Mr R. W. Matthews (reelected): president, Miss Card (reelected); vice-presidents. Mesdames Carlyon and McKenzie. and Messrs Cole and Shepherd: treasurer. Mr K. H. Allen (re-elected); secretary, left in the hands of the incoming committee;. auditor, Mr C. W. Ritchie; committee. Mesdames Lawson, Halpin. Saunders, Harkness, Messrs Lowell and Robbins; school staff members. Messrs Hayes, Kilsby and Willett; delegates on dental clinic, Messrs Allen and Cole; delegate to calf and agricultural clubs, Mr Cole. The following were elected life members of the association:—Mesdames M. B. Tait and S. Murphy. Mesdames Tait and Murphy have been enthusiastic workers for many years in school, interests, and very complimentary remarks were made at the meeting when such well-deserved recognition of their services was made. It was stated that parents were showing high appreciation of the work of the dental clinic, and evidence of this is given by the increased payments made by parents. Some accounts dating back to 1936 and 1937 have been paid during the. past year. RED CROSS SOCIETY ANNUAL MEETING OF BRANCH. The annual meeting of the Featherston sub-branch of Red Cross Society took place last night, Mrs Sharp presiding over a good attendance. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames N. Matthews, D. H. S. Riddiford, C. Elgar, H. Clark, B. Burt, Misses B. Donald, F. Donald. Messrs F. S. Hayes, H. Clark and C. Ritchie. After the annual report had been read the president expressed her thanks for the interest which had been shown in the society. Mrs Sharp appealed for more members, especially men. “The branch is allowed one delegate on the Wairarapa Centre for every hundred members,” she said. "Let us strive to send two delegates.” The following officers were elected for the ensuing year: Patroness, Mrs D. H. S. Riddiford; president, Mrs G. S. Sharp; vice-presidents, Mesdames Arch Clark, Carlyon, Bloxam. McKenzie and Miss Card; secretary and treasurer, Mrs Willett; committee, Mesdames R. W. Matthews, H. Clark, V. Bergh, Raper, Rea, Tutbury, J. W. Holland, G. Yule, J. Donald, Seagar, Misses B. Smith, G. Browne, G. Jensen, F. Donald, Messrs J. C. Willet, A. Robbins, R. P. Hardy, A. P. Clapshaw, H. Benge and Dr Sharp. Captain Galloway spoke in appreciation of tfie work carried out by the Featherston branch. He said that it was much easier to form Red Cross branches, since the war and Featherston had set a good example to the Wairarapa. Since the outbreak of war Featherston had forwarded a much appreciated case of goods for the soldiers. So far all demands on the Red Cross Society had been met. Captain Galloway referred to the Red Cross work carried on in other countries, and said that prisoners of war had received parcels through the Red Cross Society which was the only means of contact. The £250,000 appeal to be launched on Florence Nightingale’s birthday was the only appeal to be made by the Society. The sum of £15,000 per year was spent on ex-ser-vice men in hospitals, etc. He referred to the splendid work which was being done by junior members. He was proud of the effort made at Cross Creek, £5 per month being contributed to the Red Cross. Mr Willet and Miss Card thanked Captain Galloway for his address. Captain Galloway then presented certificates to the following: Misses .J. Donald, E. Cole. E. J. Smith. J. W. Hardie, M. Bloxam. R. Riddiford, F. Donald, G. Jensen, H. Bergh, J. Jensen, G. Browne, Mesdames F. Clark, M. Baker, N. E. Willet. L. Feast. V. Brandon, V. Donald, V. Bergh and Mr J. E. Willet.

Supper was served at the conclusion of the meeting.
