Williams —Mahala; J. F. Fergus—Sigurd, Agog; A. C. Messervy —Kena, Gay Bell, Bronze Emerald. Death of Tetahinga. An accident at Auckland with fatal consequences for Tetahinga while being qualified on Saturday .with the hunt for jumping events has removed one of the most promising recruits to the winter sport in the province. Tetahinga was secured only recently by the Hon Eliot R. Davis and Mr O. Nicholson to race as a jumper, but as lately as Saturday morning he surprised by going stride for stride with Jack Tar in the last half of a mile gallop by the latter horse. When schooled privately he had never made a mistake. He was an acceptor for the Papakura Hurdles at the Franklin meeting on Saturday. While jumping he hit a stake at the side of the hurdle with a foreleg, which was broken. Density in Good Form. Density’s presence in the Doncaster Handicap at Washdyke no doubt accounted for the small field, while lhe pool was considerably restricted owing to the mare almost monopolising speculation. Her win price was of the Defaulter order. and peculiarly enough, she paid more as a place proposition. Density gave a spectacular display of galloping and it would not be idle boasting to suggest that in her present form, she has no equal in New Zealand up to at least six furlongs. As her breeder-owner, Mr D. Grant, is president of the South Canterbury Jockey Club. Density’s success was very popular, and she was given an enthusiastic reception on returning to scale. The brilliant mare will be difficult to place from now onward, but no doubt she will again bo produced at Washdyke at the winter meeting. Great Northern Hurdles. The following are lhe entries for the Groat Northern Hurdles, 2.1 m: Mio Fratollo. Survalyon, Tetahinga. Streamline, Agog, Disturbed. Aintree, Knight of Australia, Racewhip, Sim- j int, Baldric. Lustral. Full of Scotch. | Red Sun. El Meynell. Stansted, Clar- ' ion Call. Bryce Street. Aussie Ra. I Curie. Pyrenees, Chikara. Jewelled | Girdle, Okauia, London. Charade, | Lapidarian, Lucidus, To Hai. King Rey. Tiie Dozer. General Ruse, All Irish. One Whetu. Devon. Innoss Lad. I Mio Lump. Smilin' Thru. Orate. Enjoyment. High Delight. Loombination, Erination, Erlick. Very Glad. •Liverpool Grand National. When Bogskar won the Liverpool Grand National he started al over a quarter of a century to one. Mac. Moffat lhe second horse was approxi- ' mutely at the same odds, while the third horse. Gold Arrow, was at. double the price. The National this year was run in a war settling, as 30fi air raid wardens in steel helmets patrolled the course at Aintree, Ambulances with fire pumps stood by during the running of the race. Huge water tanks ' had been placed near the stands, and racegoers were handed cards advising them, in the event of an air raid, to take shelter in excavations under the i slands. '

Short Career Ended. Gay Lover's destruction will mean a severe loss to his owner. Mrs A. C. Wright. and trainer. J. Tomkinson. who raced him in partnership. In the last race at Timaru on'Saturday Gay Lover suffered a broken sessamoid bone during the running and had to be destroyed. Gay Lover won on the second day of 4,he Riccarton Easter meeting, and paid nearly three-quar-ters of a century. He was then sent to the West Coast, but failed in his two races at Greymouth owing to inability to handle the small track. He was confidently expected to show up on Saturday. but evidently he was in trouble early as he drifted to the rear with half the journey gone, and was unable to improve his position. A Successful Stable. Horses trained at Invercargil by Mr. W. E. Hazlett, who races in partnership with his brother Mr. J. S. Hazlett, have so far won stakes totalling £2955, this season. It appears almost certain that Mr. Hazlett will top the Southland trainers' list for the current term, as so •far he has produced 16 winners. Sparkle has been the most successful member of his team. She has won four races, been four times second, and twice third in 13 starts, a very consistent record. Her successes, which included the Dunedin Cup and Winton Cup, were worth £1145 in stakes. Spendthrift has been another consistent winner for £735 in stakes. In 12 starts he has won five, been ■second three times, and once third. Guste is the next of the stable's representatives on the list. In five appearances as a steeplechaser this season lie has won three races and been once second. Colonel Rouge has two wins, two seconds and two thirds to his credit in 10 starts. The stable has excellent prospects of improving on its present record, as with the approach of the jumping season Guste, Baitruin. Milford and Colonel French promise to add to their record, while other members of the stable are in the right order to ■ carry on. Te Rapa Steeplechase. The following arc the entries for the Te Rapa Steeplechase, about three miles, to be decided at' the Waikato winter meeting:—Disturbed. Clarion Call, Bryce Street, Flashlight. Diform, Red. Sun, Lucidus, Sub Editor. Tutor. En Tour. Forest Glow, Little Briton One Whetu. All Irish. Baldric. Dauber, Enjoyment, Mio Lurne. St. Musk. English Derby Favourite. Latest reports from England show that the French colt Djebel is a clearcut favourite for the New Derby, which is to be run at Newbury on June 12. Djebel won the Middle Park Stakes last season, but was not an entrant for the 1940 Derby. New entries had to be taken, however, when it was decided to transfer the classic from Epsom to Newbury and this gave the owner of Djebel and also the owners of other French clots their opportunity to nominate. An Attractive Gallop. At Hamilton yesterday an attractive round was credited to Foxsen (Long), who, with the assistance of Calshot (Curran) over the last five furlongs, traversed the distance in 1.53 V. Foxsen is in good order for her engagement in the President's Handicap at Pukekohc. I Little-Known Horses.
