COURSING
SATURDAY'S EVENTS. On Saturday the Wairarapa Coursing Club will open the. 1940 season.at the Akura Plumpton, on the 'property of Mrs M. Buick. The grounds and appointments are in excellent order for rhe season’s operations. The natural feeding of the hares on >ape and swedes has proved factory in that they are running vJ.y strongly and will provide good coursing. It is confidently expected they will reach the escapes with ease. Two slakes are to be decided during the afternoon, a 16-dog Puppy Stake and a 16-dog Open Stake. A handsome trophy has been donated by the ladies’ committee for the former event and an equally attractive trophy lias been donated by a supporter of coursing for the second event. The Puppy Stakes will give some idea of the contestants which will compete in the New Zealand Classic. The Oaks and Derby, to be run on June 1 and 3. Masterton has some very promising material which should run well in this big event next month. The first course will commence at 1.45 p.m. Refreshments will be available on the ground.
