In the course of a sermon delivered by Rev. J. A. Daglish in the Carterton Methodist Church on Sunday in conjunction with the opening of his ministry and the Anzac service, the speaker said that the strength of a nation was in the character of its people. This applied also to the church. "Neither church nor nation can be stronger than its saints,” he said. "Today we do not trust in saintliness for strength, but in ‘reeking tube and iron shard.’ But these things have only the appearance of strength. Real strength is not forged in ordnance factories but in the souls of the people. Sooner or later appearances will give way to reality. Our supreme task as members of the church and nation is to forge such character within our own souls that when the testing time comes we will be able to stand unshaken. The need of both Church and nation is for men and women who will listen to what God the Lord of Life has to say about it. This is the highest form of national service. The second implication is obedience to what we hear when we listen. Today the call to arms goes forth. There is an enemy to be routed. The need is for men and women to obey the call they hear. But. God is calling us to a greater, because more, deeply rooted, warfare. Without such obedience, though we may win a world, war, we cannot join in the victory of God." Brilliant Meteor. A West Taratahi resident reports that on Monday morning at about 5.45 o’clock when about to round up his cows for milking he observed in the western sky a great ball of lire passing through space towards the earth. It looked, he said, like the moon falling. It continued on its path for some time, and all at once burst into a thousand stars. While it lasted it was a magnificent sight to behold. Hockey Teams.
