OLD WATER-MAINS

V RECONDITIONING PROCESS SUCCESS GF EXPERIMENT. MASTERTON LOAN PROPOSAL. “Highly successful results have been obtained from the experiment, of cleaning and relining with cement a mile of 4in. cast iron street water mains in the Ponsonby district." states the "New Zealand Herald" of .January 26. 1931. "Tiie area selected for the work comprised streets in the area between New Street and St. Mary's Road. "In his report to the City Council last evening, the City Waterworks Engineer (Mr. A. D. Mead) said that, as far as could be ascertained, the pipes had been in position for from 50 to 55 years and were known to be heavily encrusted. Mr. Mead said that tests showed that the work was now in a highly satisfactory condition and. as far as could be judged, the flow now obtainable, was that equivalent, to flow from now pipes. "The average flow was 278 gallons per minute, as compared witli the average of 170 gallons per ’minute before lining, showing that the pipes had been reduced by incrustation Io an effective value of 60 per cent of that of new pipes. The cost, of this work was £637 Is Bd, equivalent to £568 13s 9d per mile, as a total of 5915 feet was treated. This figure included renewal of 44 consumers' services out of a total of 117 in the area: but a considerable amount of this work would have been necessary at an early date. “Mr. Mead said that the area in which this work was carried out was considered to be fairly representative of the condition of the older reticulation, of the city, and indicated the need of adopting a regular annual programme of reconditioning or renewal of the old street mains. He promised to deal with ' the whole question at a later date." I QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS. ; 14. —Q. Suppose the town doubled its population during the next 25 years;' and larger mains had to be laid to meet: the corresponding increased demand. | would the lined pipes be of any further value? . A. Yes; they would be lifted and relaid in the business area, which would also have grown in that time and require larger mains to satisfy the increased demand. 15. —Q. Is it proposed to bring the I “major" scheme forward again at a later date? A. Yes; immediately the war is over and prices return to normal, the Council will again be asked to consider placing the balance of the "major” scheme before the ratepayers. 16. Q. If the water pipes into my: house are defective will I get any benefit from the lining proposal? A. No. If your service is defective it must be renewed before any benefit will accrue. However, the Council renews the service on the street, (and in copper pipe) free, providing the service inside the property is renewed also, (To bo continued.)
