Rig Overweights Carried. The Omaka Hack Handicap at the Marlborough races yesterday was remarkable for the big overweight earned. Lady Magellan carried 41b. over. Colombo 161 b., Daymist 101 b., Green Ribbon 141 b., and Rondaline 221 b. The winner, Wakarara, with an allowance, got away best and held a three-length break to the straight, where Debretts had moved up and was challenging. Wakarara and Debretts wore hard at it over the last half-furlong. Lady Magellan was a moderate third, and Master Solway, who. ran. disappointingly, was fourth. Booked For The North. Streamline made his reappearance in a flat event, at Waimate on Saturday after an absence since he ran third in the Homeby Steeplechase at Riccarton in 1937. He and his stablemate, Flashlight, arc booked for the North 'lsland this week with their trainer-rider, G. Ridgway, to race at the Egmont. Wanganui, and Auckland winter meetings. Streamline is to be kept to hurdling for the early part of the trip, but should lie do well in the Great Northern Hurdles on the first day at Ellers-1 lie. he may contest the Great Northern Steeplechase on the second day. Flashlight's efforts will be confined to steeplechasing throughout the circuit. Both horses have got through a solid preparation. Flashlight is eligible for hack steeplechases. Roy Bun's Double. The principal event at the Marlborough Racing Club's meeting yesterday, the Dillon Memorial Handicap, produced an interesting contest.in which Roy Bun and Second Innings fought out the issue in the run down the straight. Roy Bun winning narrowly. Skyrena and Gemara led to the home turn, where Second Innings moved up fast on the outer. Roy Bun trailed them to the straight and when Second Innings hit the front ho challenged immediately. Roy Bun’s victory was duo partly to good handling. Titter was a, lair third and Might was fourth. Roy Eun thus won a race each day. An Unusual Mix Up. An unusual mix up in announcing the placings of the Welter Handicap at Ascot (Brisbane) resulted in heavy losses to several bookmakers. When six of the 12 runners flashed past the winning post almost abreast, only the judge was in a position to say which had succeeded. When the numbers were hoisted, the judge gave the placings as Haerepo, Bobby Boy, and Gold Fish. Gold Fish, the favourite, definitely finished at the tail of the field and the placings caused surprise. After the judge (Mr W. J. Armstrong) left the box and the horses had returned to weigh in, an official rushed to the judge's box and the placings were altered to Haerepo first, Gold Star second, and Bobby Boy third. On the crowd again voicing its dissent, the numbers were again lowered, but immediately raised again with a second lot of placings. It was then that another racing official entered the box and the placings became Haerepo. Bobby Boy. and Gold Star. In the meantime, place-betting bookmakers in the paddock and St. Leger reserves paid on Gold Fish before the placings had been altered. One' fielder alone paid out more than £lOO before ho was aware of the change. Davilia. Davilia, winner of the Tomoana Handicap at Hastings recently is a three-year-old sister to Davistock, and carries the same colours, those of Mr. A. H. Trotter. New Plymouth. Davilia was secured in Australia as a yearling for 70gns. Distress Signal Shows Promise. The two-year-old Distress Signal showed pace and promise at Hastings. He received a bad passage the first day and on the second beat all but Cherry Bay. Distress Signal is a chestnut gelding by Rocket from Pandia by Chief Ruler from Panpipes, by Panmure from Pas Soul, by Soult. It is a well-known "Highdcn" family. Pas Soul was halfsister to Nylancl and Boanerges. Distress Signal is owned by Mr. G. R. Grace and is the first of the stock of Rocket to race. Similarly Named. Among the acceptors for the Novice Stakes, one of the races at the Blenheim meeting, were Batsham and Batsman, whose names have sometimes become confused. Batsman who was placed twice at Nelson, is a three-year-old son of Cricket Bat and Conviction the dam also of Mishna. Batsham, who has boon placed this season, is a four-year-old gelding by Tidal from Hunting Bells, and ho itrained by T. R. George for Messrs. A. F. Loe and F. V. Lyson. Thermidor’s Third Win. Thermidor gained her third win in 20 starts this season when she won the Oarnaru Cup. Her earlier victories were in the Kurow and Waikouaiti Cups, so apparently North Otago is her happy hunting ground. Thermidor has a good average of placed performances, and she has been a useful stake-earner for Mrs. H. C. Manaton, whose colours she has carried for the greater part of her four years of racing. In 89 starts she has notched 13 firsts and 25 minor placings, to secure £3020.

Winning Jockeys. With nearly three-quarters of tiie season past, the position of the list oL winning jockeys is very interesting and only three points separate the first three horsemen. These are W. J. Broughton 43. B. H. Morris 42 and H. N. Wiggins 40. The success of Broughton and Wiggins is remarkable when one remembers that both have been out of the saddle for throe months of the New Zealand season. Wiggins having just returned from a visit to Australia. W. J. Mudford has retained his place as leading apprentice, and he is at present fourth on the list with 35 points. Then came P. Atkins 32. G. R. Tattersail 30. P. Spratt 29. W. F. Ellis and G. Cameron 27. R. W. McTavish 26. W. Jenkins 24. A. Jenkins and A. E. Ellis 23. L. Dulieu and L. .1. Ellis 22. P. Burgess and T. Green 21 C. T.
