ITARARUA POWER BOARD MONTHLY MEETING. (“Times-Age" Special.) The monthly meeting of the Tararua Electric Power Board was held in Ekej tahuna. The chairman. Mr J. D. Wilson presided over the following members. Messrs J. B. Carruthers, W. Simpson. C. T. Richardson. E. W. Cheetham, A. W. Bissett, F. W. Britland, J. G. Brechin. L. Johnson. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs T. Fouhy and P. Davies. It was decided to hold the statutory meeting of the Board on Friday. May 17. The matter of painting the engineer’s house was left in the hands of the sec-retary-manager and engineer. It was decided to purchase a light van for use by the fault men. Accounts presented for payment amounted to £11,098 17s 4d. The secretary-manager (Mr W. F. Taylor) in his monthly report stated: —Business along the usual lines has been in evidence and there is nothing of special interest to report. Fifteen ranges have been installed, also 11 water heaters; one motor was permanently installed. Revenue on Power Fund Account amounted to £3398 13s lOd of which amount. £856 9s 8d was from sundry debtors on Trading Account and £2542 4s 2d on Electricity 1 Account. Sales of electricity amounted to £2589 19s; sales on Trading Account £924 10s Id. The purchases of electricity for the quarter amounted to £2788. compared with £2432 16s for the same quarter last year. The loan of £3600 on behalf of extensions in the Akitio County came to hand during the month. The coast of the loan so far as debentures and procuration are concerned is not yet to hand. It has been necessary to open up the drains at the rear of Exchange Buildings. owing to a blockage. Drain pipes were found to be packed and many pipes were leaking. The Health Inspector requested that two Inspection Chambers be built in. The whole system has been overhauled. I am afraid it will prove to be an expensive job. The report was adopted.
The Engineer (Mr D. Fraser) reported as follows: —The connected load has been increased this month as set out below —Eketahuna Borough, 2000 k.w.; Eketahuna County, 56,663 k.w.; Pahiatua Borough 49,960; Pahiatua county, 53,013; Akitio Country, 22,746; total. 179,382 k.w. Inspection and tests: — New installations, Eketahuna, . 2. Pahiatua, 6; extensions, Eketahuna, 16; Pahiatua 8, re-inspections, Eketahuna 2, Pahiatua 16. Service lines erected: Eketahuna, new, 2, alterations, 9; Pahiatua, new, 3, alterations 8. Eketahuna area: The erection of additional cable in Septimus Street has been completed. New low tension cable has been run at Mauriceville to provide for the additional load at the new school. Alterations have been carried out at the sub-station and service lines overhauled in the Mauriceville township. Overhanging trees that were endangering the lines in various districts have been cut back, and some bad patches have been cleaned up. On March 18, the 11 k.v. underground cable No. 1 feeder at the Mangamaire sub-station broke down. Power was off the feeder for 40 minutes while the necessary adjustments were made to transfer the load to the I Mo. 2 feeder. The highest peak load •ecorded occurred on March 29, being 1340 k.v.a. NIREAHA FOOTBALL CLUB ANNUAL MEETING. There was an excellent atttendance of Rugby enthusiasts at the annual meeting of the Nireaha Football Club held at the Nireaha Hall on Thursday night. The president, Mr J. P. Petersen, presided. The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £6 13s, which was considered very satisfactory. References were made to the secretary, Mr H. Eagle, for his efficient work. The election of officers resulted as follows:—Patron, Mr A. Golder; president, Mr J. P. Petersen; vice-presid-ents, Messrs W. Kendrick, W. Goss. A. Davidson, Sent’., J. Hawkin, J. Spring, Senr., J. B. O'Neil, K. Daysh, W. W. Drysdale, R. Payne; secretary and treasurer, Mr H. Eagle; auditor. Mr K. Daysh; senior coach and selector, Mr R. Lawrence; third-grade coach and selector. Mr Stan Goss; social committee, Messrs K. Daysh, Ross Thomasen. R. Lawrence, J. P. Petersen and H. Eagle. It was decided to enter a senior and third grade teams in the Bush Union’s competition. Subscriptions were fixed at 5s for seniors and 2s 6d for third grade. It was decided to hold a practice on April 28. The meeting terminated with a vote of thanks to the chair. OBITUARY MRS EMILY JANE BASSETT. — The last link in the chain of the sturdy' pioneers who settled in the Eketahuna district in the 70's was broken with the passing on Monday last of Mrs Emily Jane Bassett, at the age of 96 years. Born in Euston Road, near Buckingham Palace, London, on November 6. 1844, the late Mrs Bassett arrived in New Zealand in January, 1874, by the sailing vessel Duke of Edinburgh, after an eventful (rip lasting 4£ months. She accom- ■ panied the late Mr Duncan Cameron and his nephew to Tinui, the journey from Wellington being undertaken on ' horseback. After being in the employment of Mr Cameron for some months, she married the late Mr Job Bassett in July. 1874. In the first years of their married life Mr and Mrs Bas- j sett farmed at Miki Miki and then ' at Mangaronga. Nineteen years ago Mr and Mrs Bassett retired and came ' to live in Eketahuna, where Mr Bassett died 12 years ago. ' Practically right up to the end of her long and useful life the late Mrs Bassett was full of energy, and madeall her own clothes as well as doing fine crochet work. Gardening was her favourite pastime and she was never more happy than when among het flowers. Apart from a slight deafness
she was possessed of all her faculties right up till the closing hours of her life. Of a kindly and lovable disposition. the deceased was always ready to help in any way, and every worthy cause was sure of her generous support.
A family of two daughters, Mrs Tildesley (Masterton) and Mrs E. Albrechtsen (Eketahuna) and two sons. Messrs J. Bassett (Lower Hutt) and A. J. Bassett (Levin) are left to mourn their loss. There are also 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchild-ren. One son, Arthur, made the supreme sacrifice in the Great Wai- and another son. William, died in 1929. The sympathy of many friends will be extended to the bereaved family in their bereavement. The funeral of the late Mrs Bassett took- place on Thursday. A service was conducted at St Cuthbert's Church by the Rev L. Ives, who also officiated at the graveside. The pallbearers were Messrs G. Bassett. W. Bassett (grandsons), G. Robinson, G. Martelli. R. Kiddie and D. Fraser. A large number of wreaths and messages of sympathy were received. PLUNKET SOCIETY CAKE COMPETITION. A cake competition in aid of the Plunket funds was recently hold at Alfredton and was won by Private A. Dawson, who is in camp. The effort realised £4 5s 6d. The donors of the cake were Mesdames S. M. George and Percy. Sharp Earthquake. A sharp earthquake shock was experienced in Eketahuna at 6.43 o'clock last evening.
