GUN CLUB MEETING PROFIT ON YEAR’S OPERATIONS. (“Times-Age" Special.) The chairman. Mr C. Gray, presided at £ meeting of the Carterton Gun Clu&,. when general business relating to the season’s work was dealt with. The treasurer reported that clays and cartridges valued at £l6 15s had been taken into the assets of the club. The credit balance in the bank is £64 13s Id, and in the Post Office Savings Bank £3O. Accounts amounting to £l5 16s lid were passed for payment. A slight profit was made on the year’s working. It was decided to transfer from the current account to the Post Office Savings Bank the sum of £45. A letter was received from the Hon W. Parry regretting his inability to be present at the final, shoot of the season. WOMEN’S DIVISION BIRTHDAY PARTY. There was a very good attendance at the birthday party of one of the members of the Division, Mrs W. H. Hall, and the charge for admission brought in a very substantia] sum which is to be used for the purpose of providing comforts lor soldiers on active service. The programme was opened by the president of the Union. Mrs Keith Reid, who extended a very hearty welcome to all, and hoped the gathering would be a pleasant one. "God Defend New Zealand” was the opening item, followed by a welcome song composed by Mrs Peters. “Mammy Nigger Song" in character was well received, those taking part being Mesdames E. Ordish, M. E. Mellish, , McLean. Linton. Clough and K. Hodder; ‘‘Toffy Apole” sung by children of the members was nicely rendered and warmly applauded. Two playettes, “Boots” and "Early Birds,” by members of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, were well acted and brought forth rounds of applause. A monologue by Mrs K. Hodder was splendidly rendered. Community singing was popular and everyone present entered into the spirit of the occasion. Competitions were won by Mrs R. Callisltrtr (2) and Mr W. Daysh. At supper time the candles on the birthday cake were lit by Mrs W. H. Hall and were blown out by the expresident. Mrs E. W. Allen. Mrs Ordish cut the cake and everyone present was given a piece. Shoulder sprays were presented to the producers of the plays, Mesdames Ordish and i Rabbits. Sprays were also presented ' to the president, Mrs Keith Reid, Mr A. Stretton (secretary), and to Mrs W. Hall. The happy gathering was closed. with the singing of “Wish Me Luck,” I “Auld Lang Syne” and the “National 1 Anthem.”
OBITUARY MRS A. M. BROADBENT. ' The death occurred yesterday at ' Carterton of Mrs A. M. Broadbent. The deceased had been a patient sufferer for a very long time and. her death was not unexpected. She is survived by her husband. The funeral took place this afternoon. FARMERS’ UNION BRANCH ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Carterton i branch of the Farmers' Union was held \ yesterday afternoon, the chairman, Mr t W. J. Thomas, presiding. t The chairman referred to the death ( of the late Prime Minister, who had al- t ways stressed the fact that the farmer c should have a good standard of living. J He believed Mr Savage was sincere in ( l:is beliefs. Mr Thomas also referred - to the death of the late Mr Charles I Reid, who had always been an example to others in his public life, and to the c death of the late Mr McPhee and Mr £ H. Goodin. A motion of condolence was t passed with the relatives. c Mr Thomas extended a cordial wel- s come to the new secretary, Mr R. H. c Williams, who had tackled the job in t an efficient manner. j Referring to advice received from 3 the Head Office relative to the price of fencing wire, Mr A. H. Callister said x be had that day been informed that s wire had been quoted at £7O per "ton. £ Mr Thomas said they should get the j increased prices added to their guaran- a teed prices. The union had asked for this and had been unsuccessful. I Mr A. E. Reid moved a vote of t thanks to the finance committee for its } efforts to improve the finances of the provincial district. i The chairman reported at length on t the many matters discussed by the un- | : icn during the year. The branch decided to oppose a 1 Tinui remit asking for the protection s of ferrets, etc. The following remit was approved: “That the sickness benefits under the " Social Security Act be made available j to all contributors irrespective of their “ means.” Mr Thomas expressed the view that c the branch should meet more frequently than it had in the past. He thought they should meet in the evening, sub- a sequently to the executive meeting. r It was agreed not to hold a ball this year but they might join in with the Women's Division and Young Farm- n crs'. ti Mr T. S. Arcus was elected a hon. C life member of the branch. t< k Late Mr Fred Youle. P The funeral of the late Mr Fred E Youle, a well-known and highly re- c
spected farmer at the Ahiaruhe Soldier Settlement, took place yesterday afternoon. The cortege left Broadway, Carterton, for the Masterton Cemetery, and was followed by a large number of mourners. The funeral service at the graveside was conducted by the Rev W. F. Stent, of St Mark's Anglican Church, ' Carterton. The deceased was a member of Loyal Masterton Lodge of Odd Fellows, having been attached to the Order in Masterton for the past .36 years. Deceased was given an R.S.A. funeral. The pall-bearers were Messrs H. Marsh (Masterton), J. Sage. A. Clark and A. Smith (Ahiaruhe). McMinn and D. Henderson, of Wellington. Methodist Minister. The Rev. J. Ainsley Daglesh, the newly appointed Methodist Minister to the Carterton circuit, has arrived in Carterton and will start his ministry tomorrow. The induction of Mi’ Daglesh will take place on Thursday next. ■ Prior to his coming to Carterton Mr Daglesh was in charge of the Milton circuit in the South Island.
