The death has occurred of the historian and former British Minister of Education, the Rt Hon 11. A. L. Fisher, a London cablegram reports. Mr Fisher, who had a distinguished academic and official career, was born in 1865. By the resignation of Mr W. W. Bird an extraordinary vacancy has been created for the Hutt-Horowhe-nua ward of the rural area of the Wellington Education Board. An election will be held on May 9, but in accordance with the provisions ot lhe Education Act the votes will not be counted till May 16. Idle candidates are: Ernest Alfred Hyde, Donald McCaskill, Frederick George Molesworth, Samuel Huxtable Dewsbury Peryman. Arthur Edmund Robinson.
Dr W. Bremner Highet, M. 8., Ch.B., F.R.C.S. (England), eldest son of Mr and Mrs David Highet, Overtoun Terrace. Ilataitai, has been awarded the Lord Nuffield Scholarship in Orthopaedic Surgery at the Wingfield Morris Orthopaedic Hospital, Oxford. Dr Highet graduated at Otago University. after winning a Junior University Scholarship from Otago Boys’ High School. He accompanied the Byrd Antarctic Expedition of 1934 as medical officer, afterward returning with the expedition to America. For some time he studied in the United States under leading orthopaedic authorities. For the past five years he has been engaged in post-graduate medical and ■ surgical work in England. The funeral of the late Mr L. L. Barber, which took place yesterday afternoon was attended by a large number of mourners. Among the profusion of wreaths, which numbered 13!) were tributes from the following: Manager, staff and carriers of Masterton Dairy Co.. Betts. ,1. W. Thornton, senr and J. W. Thornton, junr. The Rev John Davie conducted a service at the residence, and also at the graveside. The pallbearers were Messrs W. V. Madden. R. O. Marsack. J. Turley. B. Turley. N. Crvstall and I. Pinkerton.
