FEATHERSTON

SCHOOL COMMITTEE FACILITIES IN NEW BUILDING. ("Times-Age” Special.) Prior to the commencement of business at the last meeting of the Featherston School Committee, on the motion of the chairman, Mr J. W. Holland, members stood in silence for a minute as a mark of respect to the memory of the late Prime Minister, Mr M. J. Savage, The secretary stated that the retiring committee would hand ovei’| about 40 cords of firewood to their successors. The secretary of the Featherston Hockey Club wrote asking if the committee would grant members the privilege of using the school recreation ground for practice purposes.—The request was granted free of cost provided the consent of the present lessee was obtained. The headmaster pointed out that after going into the matter at the new school the following extras were desirable: —(1) More cupboard space in the new laboratory, and, as no provision had been made for heat in the scierice room, provision for a rock gas plant should be made. (2) Alteration to the existing lavatories. (3) A bicycle shed. (4) Provision for at least one staff lavatory in the new building. (5) The making of the so-called staff room in the building suitable for staff use. (6) Tables and chairs for the typewriters and a place for these in the place of forms, table and chairs for the new class rooms and for the secondary pupils. The chairman pointed out that the Hon. W. Perry, president of the Dominion Returned Soldiers’ Association, proposed to broadcast an address to children on April 22. The subject will be “The Meaning of Anzac Day.” It was decided to arrange facilities for the address to be heard by the children. It was decided to recommend to the incoming committee that the telephone be installed at the 'secretary’s residence. and that the committee bear half the cost. This being the last meeting of the committee at the expiration of their two years’ term of office, the chairman thanked the members of the committee for their loyal co-operation and support during the period, specially mentioning Mr C. C. Kenward, secretary, whose work over a period of twenty years had been so beneficial to the cause of education in the district. GUM GROVE GOLF CLUB LADIES’ COMPETITION. The eclectic competition which was played by the ladies at the Gum Grove links was won by Miss Lovegrove. At a meeting held subsequently, the following officers were elected: —Captain, Mrs. J. B. Davis; vice-captain, Miss Williams; secretary, Mrs McCarty; committee. Mesdames C. J. Carlyon, R. Donald and H. Lovegrove. A medal round is to be played next Wednesday. Red Cross Appeal. At a meeting of the committee appointed at the recent public meeting those present were Mesdames Elgar. Arch Clark, Willett, Bloxam, Bergh. Misses Sharp and Riddiford, Messrs. Willett (secretary), Hayes (treasurer), Dr. Sharp. S. Grant. Juno. R. R. P, Hardy and J. G. McKenzie. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames R. W. Matthews, J. C. Bidwill and A. C. Pearce. Dr. G. S. Sharp was appointed chairman. It was decided to have a house to house canvass covering the town and district. Convenors were appointed for each district, who will elect their committees. Districts are as follow: —Featherston. Dr. Sharp, convenor; Western Lake, Mr Willett, convenor; South Featherston, Kaiwaiwai and Tauherenikau, Mr. R. R. P. Hardy, convenor; Pihautca and Lower Valley to Ruamahanga Bridge. Mr. S. Grant, convenor. Zone committees for social functions were appointed as follow, with power to add: Featherston, Mesdames Sharp. Willett, Bergh Bloxam and Miss Card; Western Lake. Mesdames R. W. Matthews. J. R. Matthews, Messrs. Cole, Jensen and Parker; South Featherston. Mesdames Arch Clark, P. Wilton. R. Simmonds Stan. Benton, Frank Burt, junr., D. H. S. Riddiford; Pihautca, Mesdames J. C. Bidwill. D. C. Collins, Messrs. Grant and Juno. It was decided to hold a shop day. the stallholders to be appointed later.
