PERSONAL

Messrs Shanahan (Palmerston North), and A. W. White (Hastings), are guests today at the Hotel Midland. Mr S. S. Dean, Wellington a wellknown figure on New Zealand Rugby circles is staying at the Hotel Midland, Masterton.

Messrs D. Mooney (Wanganui), F. C. M. Smith (Gisborne), W. Kirby (Auckland), Brown (Pahiatua), and R. J. Kinniburgh (Wellington) were recent guests at the Prince of Wales Hotel, Masterton.

Miss A. Pickering has been appointed secretary to the Manawatu and West Coast A. and P. Association, in succession to Mr H. Kissling, whose resignation was received recently. Miss Pickering has been a member of the association’s secretarial staff for a number of years. The officer who commanded- the cable ship Iris, now the Recorder, when she recaptured von Luckner and his party, who escaped from Motuihi Island in 1917, Captain William Robbert Holmes, has died at his home at Bucklands Beach, aged 78 years. Captain Holmes, who held the rank of Lieutenant-Commander, R.D.R.N.R., retired about 1923, after a long career at sea.

The death occurred at his residence. Wayside ,St. Andrew’s, Scotland,, on March 19, of Mr Charles John Crawford. He had been in indifferent health for some time. He went to reside in St. Andrews about 25 years ago, and was well known and highly esteemed in that city. Mr Crawford was born in 1866 and was the third son of Captain James Coutts Crawford. R.N. (retired), who was one of the first settlers in New Zealand, where he bought the property of Miramar, adjoining the city of Wellington. Mr C. J. Crawford was educated in Scotland at Fctte’s College, and came to New Zealand, where he managed many large properties and became a prominent figure in public affairs. A keen polo player, he was president of the New Zealand Polo Association, and fishing and deer-stalking were other sports he followed while in the Dominion. He was also a keen yachtsman.
