DRAMA LEAGUE
WAIRARAPA AREA ANNUAL MEETING CENTENNIAL ONE-ACT PLAY COMPETITION. THIS YEAR’S BIG EVENT. The annual meeting of the British > Drama League (inc.) Wairarapa area .' was held at the Little Theatre Society ' Hall in Bannister Street on Monday evening. Mr T. Jordan, president, presided over a good attendance of members and representatives of various societies interested in drama. The secretary read the annual report and the treasurer presented the balance sheet. The chairman moved the adoption of Ihe report and balance sheet and congratulated the area on its activities in Ihe past year. The main policy adopted by the society to increase interest in the Theatre had been to establish a Drama School for several days in June last at St. Matthew's School Hall under the tutelage of Mrs Victoi Lloyd, of Wellington, and secondly, the holding of the annual Drama Festival for three days in July. Mr Myles Wright, of Wellington, was the adjudicator. The following officers were elected for the coming year:—President. Mr T. Jordan; vice-presidents, Mesdames 1. R. Barrer, Gibb Johnston (Carterton). J. F. Thompson (Greytown), Vincent (Pahiatua). and Mr A. S. Kilsby (Featherston); secretary. Mr J. Lawson; treasurer. Miss Nora Robinson; committee. Mesdames E. J. Rich. J. L. Hair, M. Cleghorn and J. B. Mirams: Misses O. R. Sutherland, M. Kane. J. Douglas. P. Gill and M. Dwyer, and Messrs V. Joseph. G. W. Morice. O Hemmingsen and J. A. Kennedy. A vote of thanks was accorded Mr V. Joseph, the retiring treasurer, who had held office for seven years. Mrs Rich and Miss Sutherland spoke of Mi Joseph's valuable assistance and their pleasure at co-operating with him in the work of the society in the pas', years. The secretary explained the regulations for ihe Centennial one-act playcompetition to be held this year. The British Drama League would not be holding their own festival this year but instead would be acting as agents for the Centennial Committee. This competition was open to all clubs whether afliliated with the league or rot and the winning play for New Zealand was Io receive a prize of £5O end the second £2O. There must be al least tour speaking parts, exclusive of trivial parts, playing time from 30 to 45 minutes and the local elimination festival, on Ihe lines set out by the Centennial Committee, would be held the first week in July. The winning play would go on to the Wellington District final on July 24 at the Opera Louse in Wellington and, if fortunate enough, to the New Zealand final the following evening to be hold in the same place. Further activities of the Drama i League dining the coming year were discussed and it was suggested that the area present some form of entertainment, the proceeds of which would go to patriotic purposes.
