BOROUGH AFFAIRS

i MEETING OF MASTERTON I COUNCIL I VANDALISM IN SOUTH PARK. CHANGE-OVER AT ABATTOIR. The monthly meeting of the Masi terton Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers last night. The Mayor. Mr T. Jordan presided, there also being present. Councillors W. White, G. D. Wilson, H. E. Gardner. J Ninnes, A. D. Low. A. T. Jackson. Trevor Beetham. W. Kemp. W. H. Judd unci G. W. Morice. An apology for absence was received from Councillor R. Russell. The headmaster of the Central School. Mr E. G. Coddington, wrote stating that a good percentage of the children had been taught to swim and he wished to thank the council for the use of the Dixon Street Baths. It was decided to send a letter of congratulat.on to Mr Coddington and his staff. A request from the Masterton branch of the New Zealand Red Cross Society applying for the free use of the Lecture room on the first Wednesday in every month from 8 o’clock, was granted subject to the room being not otherwise engaged. A similar request from the St. John Ambulance Division for the free use oi' the halls for First Aid and Home Nursing classes was granted, the Lecture Room being reserved for Tuesday evenings, and if available, for Thursday evenings. The secretary of the Park Superintendents' Association wrote enclosing .“ report of the recent conference ol the association, and requested an annual subscription of one guinea. The report was received. No action was taken in the matter of the subscription.

Owing to reports of vandalism at South Park, it was decided to refer the matter to the Masterton Police for action.

It was agreed that the Wairarapa Cricket Association be informed that if wickets were prepared for play and. games were forfeited and the pitches not used, p charge of half fees would be made in the future.

The manager of the abattoirs, in his report, stated that the change over to slaughtering by contract had been effected satisfactorily, and through the reorganisation, steps had been taken to eliminate Sunday killing over the winter months. In this endeavour the master butchers were giving every assistance. A circular letter was received from the _New Zealand Municipal Associa-tiori-conveying the request of the Transport Department for returns to be prepared in classified form of the age groups of licensed motor drivers. The letter was received and it was decided that the information be compiled and furnished as requested. Dr. J. Cennick Forsyth wrote complaining of creek litter deposited on his property in Bannister Street.. The council decided to obtain the opinion of the solicitor to the Municipal Association in respect to the council’s liability. It was decided to send a letter of congratulation to the committee responsible for the splendid horticultural display at the Centennial Exhibition.
