CENTRAL SCHOOL

PARENTS’ ASSOCIATION. 3 A PERIOD OF PROGRESS. The following report (signed by the ? chairman. Mr G. Beecroft) of the . Central School Parents' Association . will be submitted to the meeting of . householders to be held at the Cen- , tral School on Monday night:—lt is , with extreme regret that I report that ■ during the year we have lost one of . our members; I refer to the sad death ■ of Mrs G. K. Shaw, who while able, gave her services to the association . both willingly and gladly. It is with ! pleasure that I present this 'our se- . cond biennial report, as our efforts have been even more successful than those of the first two years. Your committee has worked well and has . achieved good results during its term of ofl'ice. Our main form of activity has been the running of the Central School old time dances which from a struggling beginning have grown to be the most popular fortnightly dance in the district. Since our last report was made new uniform jerseys have been supplied to the School Band. The nine-speaker wireless set has been installed in the school and has functioned perfectly. The sum of £25 was presented to the School Committee towards the cost of purchasing a suitable mower for the recreation ground. A donation of £6 was made for supplying material for girls’ games and £5 for the boys' cricket gear. Part cost of the expense for teachers incurred on a visit to the Exhibition was also made. Further supplies of crockery, trays, teapots, etc., were purchased for use at the functions held by the association. Besides dances, fancy dress parties were held for the children, and the committee assisted at a pupils dance held by Forms I and 2. These functions were successful not only from a financial point but also from the social aspect as regards the teachers and the parents of children attending the Central School. During the year your committee co-opted the services of Mrs M. Nicol and Mrs W. Emerson, and both of these ladies have rendered splendid service to the association. The committee decided that a visual education machine would be a suitable. objective for the association, but as a result of the outbreak of war, it was later decided that such a purchase at present was inopportune, and that the sum of £lO9 be loaned to the Government for war purposes free of interest for the duration of the war and for six months, afterwards. ’’ The funds of the association are ini' a very healthy condition as reference , to the treasurer’s report clearly shows, and arrangements have been made for j holding a series of dances during the ( 1940 season. We have every reason to ' believe in their success as a means of raising further funds.

We desire to place on record our appreciation of the valuable help and the donations given so readily by members of the association and also to the Press who have been of great assistance lo the committee al all times. The following members again offer their services and I would suggest that they merit your support:— Mesdames W. R. Nicol. E. C. Coddington. W. Emerson, M. Nicol. C. Braggins, Messrs Coddington, Shaw. M. Nicol. A. Dixon. Bradley. Stains. W. R. Nicol, Butler and Emerson. In retiring, I wish to convey to members of the outgoing committee my sincere thanks for their goodwill and co-op-eration. and extend to the new committee my good wishes for a successful term of office.
