The Masterton Post Office advises that messages in ABC sixth edition code will be accepted for the Union of South Africa. National Patriotic Fund. Included in the latest list of donations to the National Patriotic Fund is £5 from the Mauriceville District Sports Club. The Dominion total of the fund is now £83,453 8s 9d. National Military Reserve. There was a good attendance at a parade of Class 2 National Military Reserve, held in the Masterton Drill Hall last night. The men were trained by their own n.c.o’s. and officers, and the excellent progress which is being made was to be seen in the general smartness of the men. Chukor in Marlborough. The chukor (Indian hill partridge), which were released some time ago by the Acclimatisation Society in Canterbury, are reported to be spreading fast in the high country districts in Marlborough. They have been seen on the Molesworth and Gladstone stations. A Boy's Version. A quiet Jersey cow wandered along Pownall Street yesterday and turning into Upper Cole Street was annoyed by an Alsatian and in consequence sought refuge in the West School grounds. It was later driven away from the precincts of the school by two boys. The version of the incident as related by a small boy when he arlived home was that a wild bull had been chased out of the school grounds by two boys in the primer class. Women’s Land Army. A mixed reception was given a remit urging the union’s support for the formation of a women’s land army, which was introduced at the annual Waikato sub-provincial, council of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union in Hamilton on Saturday, the remit being defeated by 18 votes to 17. Several speakers criticised the suggestion of a land army and expressed the opinion that there was not the number of young women available as had been suggested.
A Schoolgirl’s Death. A haemorrhage following a fracture of the skull, received when she slipped on a banana skin and fell on April 4. was given by the coroner. Mr J. Emslie, at an inquest held in Wellington yesterday, as the cause of the death of Joyce Spurdie. aged 8. of 66 Central Terrace. Evidence was given by pupils of the Convent School. Guilford Terrace, that the girl ran down a flight of steps into a basement, slipped on a banana skin, and fell heavily on the concrete floor. Her death occurred in hospital on April 6. A Clean Township. In commenting on the annual report of the Borough Health Inspector. Mr T. A. Russell, presented at last night's meeting of the Masterton Borough Council. Councillor W. White stated that he considered Masterton one of the cleanest and tidiest towns in the North Island. The Mayor, Mr T. Jordan. added that there was no cleaner town in New Zealand. "It is in large measure due to the tactful way in which the inspector carries out his duties.” staled Councillor J. Ninnes. Mr Russell was congratulated on his comprehensive report.
