Mr If. Esson. of Masterlon, is visiting Hastings. Lieutenant-Colonel Wyman, D. 5.0., V.D., lias been appointed to command tiie Waikato Mounted Rilles. Captain W. W. Dove. M.C.. assistantadjutant and quartermaster-general, northern military district, and Captain J. G. C. '•Vales, M.C., deputy-assistant adjutant and quartermaster-general, have both been promoted to the rank of major. Sergeant-Major C. E. Rogers, officer-in-charge of the Masterton Defence Office. who has been on annual leave (part of which he spent at the Welling-ton-East Coast Mounted Rifles' annual camp at Waipukurau), took up duties again this morning. Messrs. C. Morgan and McLachlan (Wanganui), P. Lyster (Palmerston North), M. Kirschberg, .1. Gillies, G. Yule, W. Boult, W. Rusbridge, G. Whitaker. J. A. Oliver and J. Ronald (Wellington), have booked in at the Hotel Midland, Masterlon. The biennial report of the Masterton Central School Parents’ Association states that Mr and Mrs G. Beecroft do not intend to seek re-election, and that their absence will be a decided loss to the Association as they have carried out their duties in a most capable and conscientious manner. The funeral of the late Mr S. G. Pike took place at Masterton yesterday afternoon. the officiating minister being the Rev. John Davie. Many beautiful wreaths were in evidence. The pallbearers were Messrs F. J., W.. and E. A. Holloway, and J. F„ E. H„ and G. H. Fike. Sergeant Pilot Reginald Callinan, of the Royal Air Force, who has been reported missing after an operational patrol over the North Sea, was, during his five years' residence in Napier before he went, to England, one of the leading athletes of the province. He played as wing three-quarter for the Pirates’ Rugby Club, and as an allround athlete won the decathron cup: in addition he held the provincial titles for 120yds., 220yds., and 440yds. hurdles, the pole vault, hop, step and jump, and long jump. He was well known in football circles in Masterton. There was a large and representative- attendance at the funeral yesterday afternoon of the late Mr Thomas Wyeth, a well-known and highly respected resident of the district. The Rev. David McNeur, of the Lansdowne Presbyterian Church, assisted by the Rev. R. Dickie,- conducted a service at the residence and also at the graveside. Wreaths were sent by the. Masterton Harrier Club, Mt. Bruce Tennis Club, Levin and Co. and staff Masterton, pupils of Miki Miki School, Wairarapa Caledonian Society, and the president and members of the Mt. Bruce Women's Institute, besides many others. The pall-bearers were Messrs C. Wyeth, T. Peterson. O. A. Wyeth, E. Wyeth, A. Tankersley and G. Blaichford, grandsons of the late Mr Wyeth.
