The Paper Money mare Guilder attracted attention at Riccarton yesterday by galloping six furlongs in 1.16 2-5. She was schooled -last week and shaped very well. Marlborough Cup Weights. The correct weights of Liane and Might in the Marlborough Cup are .7.7 each, not 7.0. as published previously. Wiggins’s Plans. After an absence of five weeks, the successful jockey H. N. Wiggins has returned from a visit to Melbourne, and he intends to resume riding at the Marlborough Racing Club’s autumn meeting, which will be held on Saturday and Monday. During his trip Wiggins had several rides, finishing second on Positron in the second division of the Calliope Handicap and third on Zonda to Pure Gold and Auric’s Star in the Alister Clark Stakes at Moonee Valley. Wiggins has received a good offer to return to Melbourne to ride for the stable presided over by L. Robertson. If he accepts he will return to Australia later in the year, probably about the end of June, and in the meantime he will follow his calling in the Dominion.
Racing in South Africa. , Writing to a friend in Auckland, the New Zealand jockey. L. H. Clifford, speaks favourably of racing conditions in South Africa. Many of the races carry good stakes, the Durban July Handicap £6OOO. Metropolitan Handicap £5OOO. Peninsula Handicap. £3500. and several others £2OOO. Races are held every Saturday in Capetown, where Clifford states he averages five mounts at each meeting, and has ridden 17 winners to March 11. The stable ho rides for has 30 horses in training practically all the year. Clifford adds that he is doing well, but finds the climate very hot. He does not travel, and appreciates the fact that, there is no tax or deductions from riding fees. Cl if-, ford expects to return, to the Dominion before the end of the year. Betty Eoop. Shortly after winning the New Zealand Futurity Stakes at Ashburton. Betty Boop was sold at a substantial figure to an Auckland buyer, and she is to be trained by M. Stewart. at Te Rapa. Betty Boop, a three-year-old filly by Jack Potts, from Disappearance. has been racing in the interests of W. J. Doyle, a Canterbury sportsman, for whom she has won twice in ten starts during this season. Her previous success was scored at Wellington on January 21, when she won the' Discovery Handicap, running the mile and a half in 3.24. from a 3.43 mark. In the Futurity Stakes she covered the mile and five furlongs in 3.47 4-5. Pantheon in Retirement. Mr. P. Miller has given Pantheon (imp.) to Mr. P. H. Osborne, and the horse will spend the remainder of his days in comparative retirement at Willaroo, Tarago. Pantheon has done great service for Mr. Miller, and has been one of the greatest sires oi, stayers in recent years. His progeny have won more than £lOO.OOO in stakes and include Peter Pan. Avenger. Maikai, Rod Sails, Feminist and many other good stayers. He is a bay horse by Tracery, from Scotch Rose, and was foaled in 1921. Pantheon is being retired from the Kia Ora stud on account of the recent additions to its sire strength by the recently imported Le Grand Due, and Young Idea. Mr Miller was loth to part with such an old favourite as Pantheon, but the home offered for the horse, and the knowledge that he would not be misused, influenced his decision.
The Raker’s Sound Breeding. The Raker, winner of two races at Ofimnru, was purchased as a yearling by his present owner. Mr W. J. Dore, of Fairlie. for 70 guineas. By Croupier from Kippit Lee. The Raker can claim some sound breeding. Croupier, by Surveyor. from Pellet by Thurnham from Pell by Hymettus. was a high-class racehorse, winning 12 good races, including the Wanganui Guineas. Harcourt Cup. C.J.C. Handicap in course record time, Criterion Handicap. Cashmere Plate, and Longbeach Hack Handicap, and was only once unplaced in his two and three-year-old career. Litigation prevented him racing at four years which greatly affected his stake earnings. Kippit Lee is by Arausio from Snowshoe by Kilbroney from Snowstell. This is the same family that produced Arctic King, Pandava, Rabbi and Inflation. It is interesting to note that Kippit Lee's next foal, now trained at Riccarton as Roman Son. is by Inflation, and shows a good deal of promise.
Premature Publication of Weights. The Waimate Rftcing Club issued the weights for ils meeting before the conclusion of the racing at Oamaru. In the Gardiner Memorial Handicap. Swordstick finished well in front of Nightdress and in the Waimate Cup they meet again on the same terms. Sir Hugh also finished in front of Nightdress and meets him on lib better terms in the Waimate Cup. Sir Hugh also comes in on better terms with Lazybones. This means that the premature publication of the weights deprives Nightdress and Lazybones of a chance on paper in the Waimate Cup. In the Waitangi Hack Handicap Lady Don meets Pink Dress on 6!b better terms than the actual weights carried in the final race at Oamaru. If Lady Don again claims a 31b. allowance it will mean that she will meet Pink Dress on 91b. better terms for boating her. Strenuous Tasks. The Wrecker disputed favouritism in the Gardiner Memorial Handicap at Oamaru with Swordstick, but both failed in the soft going. Produced again a little over an hour later. The Wrecker was again in demand, and finished up as a surprise first choice. This move was no doubt encouraged by The Wrecker's performance in winning the Flying Handicap on the same course at New Year after filling fourth place in the principal event, one mile and a quarter, two races before. On Saturday, however, he was never in a likely position in his second outing. The Wrecker had two races in one day on two previous occasions this season. At Ashburton in the spring he contested the Tinwald Handicap, one mile and a quarter, and three races later, ran fourth in the Wakanui Handicap, seven furlongs. Al Trcntham in January he was one .of the unplaced division in the Wellington Centennial Cup. one mile and a half, and three races later he took his place in the Anniversary Handicap, one mile, to bo one of the rear division throughout.
