TURF NEWS AND NOTES

CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE AND COURSE The English Derby WILL BE VALUABLE RACE THIS YEAR (BY “THE GRAFTER.’) With the announcement that the Derby would be run at Newbury, the entry for the big race was reopened with the most gratifying results. It costs an owner £5O to enter his horse for this race, and another £5(l if it is left in after the declaration of forfeit. No fewer than seventyeight horses were entered, representing nearly every one of last year’s two-year-olds of merit and it is estimated that the race will be wot th about £7ooo—a truly remarkable figure for wartime racing. A feature this year is the entry of two fillies. Golden Penny and Furane. On the occasion of the last war a filly. Fifinella. won both the Derby and the Oaks, but as these two races are to be run this year on successive days it is improbable that either horse will run in both. as their owners have taken the trouble to enter them for the Derby, if. is to be presumed that, all being well, they will take their chance. Golden Penny was considered the best English two-year-old filly last year, and Furane occupied the same position in French racing—in some quarters she was actually considered better than the colts. Several French colts have been entered for the coming Derby, including Djebel. It is difficult to pick out any English three-year-old as a champion, and it is probable that Djebel will occupy the position of favourite when the flat season gets going. This French challenger is being trained by Steve Donoghue, who rode so many Derby winners during his long career as a jockey.
