The headmaster of Waipukurau District High School. Mr V. Parsons, is under transfer to Wairoa. Mr Greenfield-Brown. “Glenburn.” was a guest at the Hotel Midland, Masterton, at the weekend. The New Zealand ace, Flying Officer E. J. (Cobber) Kain, is affianced to Miss Joyce Phillips, aged 23 years, an actress appearing in repertory at Peterborough, a London cablegram reports.
Mr W. J. M. Dawson, Whangarei who has been an associate member of the Institute of Electrical Engineers, has been transferred to the class of member (M.1.E.E.) Mr R. W. Prout, Masterton. has been admitted as a student I.E.E. Weekend visitors at the Prince of Wales Hotel, Masterton, included:— Messrs L. Nee, D. S. Hay, R. E. Spooner (Langdale), E. Doyle, F. J. Bradley (PleaSant Point. Canterbury), S. Cunningham (Wellington), J. O'Connor. E. Simpson (Tinui), G. Meurk (Mauriceville).
The funeral of the late Mrs W. Brown, of Napier, and formerly of Masterton, took place in Masterton on Saturday afternoon. There was a representative attendance of mourners and many beautiful wreaths were in evidence. T?ie Ven. Archdeacon E. J. Rich conducted a service at St. Matthew’s Church and also officiated at the graveside. Messrs B. Hawkins, P. Maidment, T. Carver. S. Smith, C. Murphy and L. King acted as pallbearers.
Mr R. Payne, of Pine Street, Masterton, his staff .clients and friends, gathered together on Saturday to say su revoir to a very popular member of the firm, Mr Jack Leete, who has joined the New Zealand Air Force. Mr Leete, who will proceed shortly to the Levin training centre, was presented with a handsome set of military hairbrushes by those assembled as a token of the high esteem in which he was held. The presentation was accompanied by speeches conveying the sincere wishes of all for Mr Leete’s early and safe return to the staff of Mr R. Payne.
Pilot Officer David Alexander Rankin, a son - of Mr and Mrs D. Rankin, Malcolm Avenue. Wellington, has been reported missing after having taken part in air operations with the Royal Air Force. Cabled advice to this effect was received by his parents on Saturday. Pilot Officer Rankin joined the Air Force in 1937. and after two months' preliminary training at Rongotai aerodrome went through an extensive course in Christchurch. He left for England in February. 1939, in charge of a parly pf 38 R.A.F. candidates who sailed from Wellington. He intended to remain in the service for six years, and was attached to the 115th Squadron.
