RUGBY FOOTBALL
* FITNESS TRAINING SCHEME. TO BE LAUNCHED IN MASTERTON. Mr S. McNicol. Recreation Officer for the Wellington Area. has arranged with the local football clubs to conduct a training class for footballers on Monday nights. Each club will send along three or four representatives to the class where they will be instructed in suitable methods of training. They will then be able to go back to the clubs on their own training nights and give about a quarter of an hour’s instruction. The value of physical training for football has long been recognised. All Black teams on tour have always indulged in exercises while on the voyage while American football teams always have a rigorous course of physical exercise as a prelude to their very strenuous season. Mr McNicol has already launched a similar project in Wellington where it is meeting with enthusiastic support ■from the Rugby Union and all clubs. As an extension of the scheme it is hoped later on to induce well-known coaches to visit the Wairarapa and give short talks on Rugby tactics and technique in conjunction with the training courses on which occasions the club coaches will be invited. Mr J. H. Parker, a member of the 1924 Invinciblcs has expressed keen interest in the proposal and has indicated his willingness to help further the scheme. "Should any other sports clubs be interested in the establishment of a similar course or wish to co-operate with the Rugby clubs.” said Mr McNicol. "they would be welcome. In view of the unsettled outlook for sports generally, it behoves everyone whose playing days may appear to be over, to be ready to help and one of the best ways is to be fit for any emergency."
