CARTERTON
FAREWELL GATHERING METHODIST MINISTER. (“Times-Age” Special.) There was a very large attendance at the Methodist Sunday School room last evening, the occasion being a farewell gathering tendered to the Rev. H. White, Mrs. White and family, who will shortly leave Carterton for Tauranga, whither Mr. White has been transferred. Mr. L. J. Hunt, secretary and treasurer to the circuit, occupied the chair. Apologies for absence were received from Mr. and Mrs. D. T. King, J. A. Ordish, Joe Udy, Rev. W. F. Stent and the Salvation Army captain. The proceedings were opened with the singing of the New Zealand National anthem, "God Defend New Zealand,” Mrs. W. Vaughan being at the piano. Mrs. F. E. Tyler led the congregation in prayer after which the following programme was rendered, every item being enthusiastically encored: Song. Miss Surtees; mandoline solo, with pianoforte accompaniment, Mrs E. Ordish; song, Miss Greta White; song, Mrs Nightingale; mouth organ solo. Master Ken White.
Mr Hunt said he was glad to see such a large attendance. They had met to say farewell to the Rev. H. White, who had been their minister for the past seven or eight years, and his wife and family. It was hard to sever firm ties and the departure of Mr. White, he felt sure, would be severely felt as he had made many warm friends during his stay in the district. Mr. White was a great worker and the church and its surroundings in Carterton had been left the richer by his labours. Nothing at any time was ever too much for him to do for his parish, the people and the town generally. Besides his church work he had been instrumental in providing a croquet lawn and tennis courts on the church property. When Mr. White came into the circuit there was a small debt in connection with the church and Sunday school, and he set about' with a will to extinguish it. This was accomplished with the assistance of other willing workers. Then there was more work to be faced in the renovation of the church, and it was pleasing to be able to say that after strenuous efforts, principally those of Mr. White, this had been carried out and the Church practically remodelled inside. They were all very sorry that Mr. White was leaving the district but the health of his wife had to be considered and a move to a warmer atmosphere haa been arranged for her benefit when the change of stations was discussed at the last conference. He had great pleasure in asking Mr. White to accept from the congregation a well-filled wallet in recognition of the valued services rendered by him. The church members at Dalefield and other parts of the district had also contributed to the presentation. He wished Mr White. Mrs White and family "God speed and good luck in his new; sphere of labours,” and If his work and sincerity while in Carterton were any criterion he would not be long in making many warm friends at Tauranga. (Applause.) Mrs. Peters, on behalf of the Ladies’ Guild, presented Mrs. White with a beautiful travelling rug. Mrs. White also received a posy. Mrs. Wadham, on behalf of the Ladies' Croquet Club, thanked Mr. While for the work he had done on their behalf and asked his acceptance of an umbrella suitably engraved. Mrs J. Newbould presented Mrs White with a box of beautiful flowers.
Miss Jones, on behalf of Sunday School superintendents, referred to the excellent work done by Mr. White, and handed to Ruth and Lucy White books, and to Ken White, a pocket knife. A box of stationery was also presented to Ruth White and a box of confectionery to Kenneth White. Mr. Roberts, M.P., on behalf of local preachers, paid a tribute to Mr. White in connection with his labours and wished Mr. and Mrs. White and family good health and happiness in the future.
The Rev. W. J. Couling, Presbyterian Minister, Mr. W. Vaughan, choirmaster of the Methodist Church, and Mrs. Tyler (Salvation Army) added their tributes and wished the guests of the evening the best of luck. Mr. White said that he appreciated to the full .what had been said and what had been done for his wife, himself and family during their residence in Carterton. He would always look back with pride and pleasure to the years he had worked in Carterton and would always remember the kindness of the people of his circuit and Carterton and district generally. Mrs. White also returned thanks for the kindness extended to her.
Supper was handed round and a happy gathering was later brought to a conclusion. Mr. White and family will leave today by car en route to Tauranga. Mrs. White will follow later.
