CENTRAL SCHOOL

MEETING OF COMMITTEE PARENTS' ASSOCIATION WORK APPRECIATED. The monthly meeting of the Central School Committee was held last night, Mr. J. E. MeV. Calwell, chairman, presiding. Also present were: Messrs. W. K. Nicol, A. Newman, C. J. Braggins. A. V. Dixon, J. 11. Cole, H. A. Gibbs and G. R. Beecroft. An apology for absence was received from Mr. F. A. Wesney. The secretary, Mr. A. W. G. Rollings, submitted a finance statement and correspondence received since last meeting was dealt with. It was decided to again subscribe to the Wellington School Committee Federation. Tile secretary was directed to write to Mr. E. C. Coddington expressing appreciation for the interest and generous work done by him in teaching the children to swim, which had proved. of much benefit to them. The congratulations of the committee were expressed to the Parents’ Association for their efforts in conducting periodical dances which had proved successful and contributed to the advantage of the children. The headmaster submited a very satisfactory report, of attendance and progress, showing that the health of the children was remaining very good. The present roll number at the main school was 506: average attendance. 481.7; percentage. 95.2: East School roll number. 67; average attendance, 57,8; percentage. 86. The combined roll totalled 580. A certain amount of time was lost on account of the Easter holidays, trip to the Exhibition and the death of the Prime Minister, so that the attendance might be considered highly satisfactory. The headmaster reported that 95 per cent, of Standard VI. could swim and other standards also showed high percentages. This was in spite of an unsatisfactory swimming season. The inspectors visited the school recently and favourably reported upon the work of tiie probationary teachers. Various Acquirements by the headmaster were left in the hands of Mr. Braggins to attend to. Il was decided to apply to the Education Board to provide a new flag for the Central School, as the present one was worn out after being in use for about forty years, and also a flag for the East School, which flici not have one at present. The chairman intimated that the annual meeting’ of househ.Mde.rs would be held on April 22 and that nominations must be received in writing on Monday, April 15 and that no nominations could be made at the meeting. Messrs. Calwell, Braggins and Beecroft were appointed visiting members by rotation.
