BASKETBALL

WAIRARAPA ASSOCIATION ACTIVITIES BUSINESS AT ANNUAL MEETING. OPENING DAY TOURNAMENT. There was a very good attendance at the annual meeting of the Wairarapa Basketball Association held in the Y.M.C.A. on Tuesday night. Miss O. R. Sutherland was in the chair. The report and balance sheet, which showed a successful year's activity was adopted.

The following officers were elected for the ensuing year: President. Miss R. K. Edwards; secretary. Miss Joan Gemmell: treasurer. Miss Patricia Hanley; executive. Misses M. Eastwood. A. Burgess. C. Talbot, M. McLaren and E. McLaren, with power to add; hon. auditors. Messrs. Sallar and Sellar. It was decided to commence the season's play with a tournament for grading purposes. All teams would play in one grade, in two sections. Play would commence on April 27. entries to close on April 22, with the secretary. Miss J. Gemmell. 21 Tarawa Street, Masterton. A report on the representative team which played in the Centennial tournament at Wellington was given by the manager, Miss D. O'Donnell. It was considered that the prospects for a successful season were bright. It was agreed that this season representative matches would be played in the A and B grades. A special vote of thanks was passed to Miss O. R. Sutherland, who had retired from the position of president. Reference was made to the willing service she had given basketball over many years, and it was stated that she would be very much missed. Miss Sutherland had been made a life member in 1938. and although retiring from active basketball, accepted the position of vice-president of the association for the year 1940. Miss Sutherland stated that she had enjoyed her association with the game and although retiring from active service she would always take a keen interest in the welfare of the game. Miss Sutherland wished the association every success for the coming season. The secretary was instructed to write letters of thanks to Mr M. A. Wellington (auditor). Mr G. G. Hancox, Principal of Wairarapa College; Miss O'Donnell and the Press.
