FEATHERSTON

APPEAL FOR FUNDS FOR SICK AND WOUNDED SOLDIERS. (“Times-Age" Special.) A public meeting in connection with the appeal lor funds for sick and wounded soldiers which is being made by the joint council of the Order of Si John and the Red Cross Society, was held in Anzac Hall last evening and was well attended. Representatives from Carterton, Greytown, and Martinborough and Featherston districts were present. The Mayor (Mr J. W. Card) was in the chair. Mr Card briefly explained the object of the meeting. The appeal was the second drive made by the National Patriotic Board and the Red Cross Society and St John Ambulance Brigade were to act as collectors and pay the money in to the Board. Mr Card introduced Major Abel who is the honorary Dominion organiser. Major Abel explained that the Red Cross Society could only work for the sick and wounded, for prisoners of war or for the relief pf distress caused by war. The appeal was to be launched on May 12 by the churches and the collecting would begin on Monday, May 13 and continue till about June 2. Major Abel spoke of the personal method of collecting and promised every assistance from the National Patriotic Board. The following committee was appointed: Miss Card. Mesdames Bloxam. J. C. Bidwill, R. W. Matthews, Arch Clark, D. H. S. Riddiford, A. C. Pearce V. Bergh, J. Willett, Chas Elgar, Sharp. Messrs S. Grant. J. G. McKenzie, R. P. Hardy, J. Juno and Dr Sharp; secretary, Mr Willett; treasurer, Mr Hayes. Major Abel was accompanied by Mr Annand Smith, the hon treasurer for the Wellington Province. Featherston is the first sub-centre to have Major Abel address a meeting for this appeal. Mrs Sharp (president of the Featherston sub-branch Red Cross Society) expressed the thanks of the Society to Major Abel.

HAUNUI CROQUET CLUB CARD TOURNAMENT. At the Haunui Croquet Club's euchre tournament the prizes went to the following: Ladies, Miss Chisholm 1; Mrs Barry 2; men, Mr Rae 1, Mrs J. Mellish 2.

RUGBY FOOTBALL ANNUAL MEETING OF CLUB. At the annual meeting of the Featherston Football Club several new members were elected. The election of officers resulted as follows: —Patron. Mr Ben Roberts, M.P.; president, Mr R. W. Matthews; vice-presidents, Messrs J. W. Card, J. Moriarty, S. Batchelor, the Rev J. T, Holland, C. Buck, F. Brough, E. Neale. J. G. Donald, J. C. Bidwill, D. H. S. Riddiford, J. Rae. J. B. Davis, S. Reid. H. Cundy, W. J. Pope and Bruce Donald; secretary, left to the incoming committee to appoint; treasurer, Mr H. Cundy; management committee, Messrs C. Bambry, J. W. McKain, M. McKenzie, H. Benge, and N. Elder; coaches, Messrs P. Habib, C. Bambry and A. Habib; delegates to combined sports committee, Messrs J. Moriarty and A. Tait; delegates to Wairarapa Rugby Union, Messrs H. Benge and F. Brough, emergency, C. Bambry. It was decided to enter the junior, third and fourth competitions. The subscriptions were fixed at juniors 6s 6d, thirds 4s, fourth grade 2s 6d; honorary members’ subscription ss. A very hearty vote of thanks was passed to the outgoing secretary, who was voted an honorarium. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to the ladies who had organised dances in aid of the club's funds. It was decided to leave to the incoming committee the awarding of two medals and two cups, to be held annually.
