CARTERTON
RUGBY FOOTBALL DALEFIELD CLUB MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) Although there was a fairly good attendance at the annual meeting of the Dalefield Football Club no election of officers took place and it was left till the next Wednesday evening after a practice of the club for members to make the selection. It was reported that the club’s coach would enter camp shortly and that the appointment of a successor would also be made on Wednesday. BASKETBALL CLUBS ANNUAL MEETINGS. At the annual meeting of the Carterton Basketball Club, Miss R. Hopkins was elected captain in place of Miss A. Sorensen, who did not seek re-elec-tion. Four new members were elected and the formation of a strong club this year is expected. At the Belvedere Club’s annual meeting, the election of officers was held ever for a further meeting. Arrangements were made for a dance to be held in conjunction with hockey players. GOLF CARTERTON CLUB DRAW. The following is the draw for a Stableford bogey competition to be played by the men on the Carterton links on Saturday:—No. 1 tee: George and Wells, Moroney and Taverner, Steel and Gustofsen, Smith and Whitburn, Riggs and Clark, Smart and Dudson, Dwane and Jackson. The following is the draw for the first competition of the season, a medal round and hidden partner contest to be played by lady members of the Carterton Golf Club: No 13 tee: Miss Welch and Mrs Candy; Miss Berrill and Mrs Callender; Mrs Orr and Mrs Moroney; Mrs Harrington and Miss Moody. No 11 tee: Miss M. Campbell and Miss M. Smart; Mrs Colson and Mrs| Forbes; Mrs Ross and Miss P. Renall; Mrs M. Campbell and Miss N. Renall; Miss Knutson and Mrs R. N. Campbell; Miss Lamb and Mrs Robinson; Miss Armstrong and Mrs Pointon. No 9 tee: Miss Peters and Miss Freer; Mrs Riggs and Miss I. Corlet; Miss Booth and Miss Hamer; Mrs Goodin and Miss V. Corlet. No 16 tee: Miss J. Orr and Miss Moody; Miss Lawrence and Miss Shankland; Miss Lane and Mrs Webster; Mrs Handley and Miss McFarlane; Miss Copeland and Miss Beaven. Misses Berrill and M. Campbell will supervise afternoon tea arrangements.
WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MEETING AT PARKVALE. The monthly meeting of the Parkvale Women’s Institute was held in the Parkvale Hall yesterday afternoon, Mrs B. Renall presiding over a large attendance. The meeting was opened with the Ode to Friendship and the Aspiration. As a mark of respect to the memory of the late Prime Minister (the Rt Hon M. J. Savage) members stood in silence for a few moments. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames D. Adams, W. Hammond and W. Renall. An invitation was received from the Te Ore Ore Women’s Institute to attend their first birthday party on Saturday and members were appointed to represent the institute. A letter was received from the Physical Welfare and International Branch asking the institute to send a representative to meet Miss Thompson, physical instructress. This meeting was held yesterday, Miss M. Adlam representing the institute and later in the afternoon she returned to the meeting and explained to members the work Miss Thompson would be carrying into effect during her stay in Carterton. Those interested will attend classes commencing on Wednesday next at the Dalefield Dairy Coy's building, Broadway. Carterton. It was decided to form a Singing Circle of which Mesdames C. Downes. R, Williams and N. Peacock are to be the leaders. Mrs W. Hammond was again elected leader of the Drama Circle. Mrs T. King was thanked for' her donation of tea and sugar to the Circle and it was resolved to forward a letter of thanks to Miss Gray for her donation of a bag of cones. Members were reminded of the council meeting to be held in the Masonic Hall. Masterton, on April 24. A report was made on the cost of three parcels which were forwarded to the Patriotic Council for soldiers. A further supply of wool was distributed to members for the purpose of knitting scarves and balaclavas for the Air Force. A very interesting travel talk was given by Mrs W. J. C. Wells, of Carterton. on her visit to New York. Paris and England. Mrs Wells was listened to with great interest and was accorded a hearty vote of thanks and presented with a shoulder spray. A musical competition arranged by Mrs J. James was won by Miss L. Rayner. Members' potatoes in the recent potato growing competition were weighed and the winner was Miss S. Rayner with 1511 b.
The monthly competitions resulted: Biscuits to be forwarded lo Wellington for soldiers' overseas. Mrs W. Adlam 1; Mrs E. Nolan 2; Mrs J. Taplin 3. Presentation box of flowers. Mrs R. Williams 1; Mrs H. Rayner 2; Mrs J. Taplin 3. Junior members: Knitted balaclavas for soldiers, Miss L. Rayner 1; Miss S. Rayner 2, Miss J. Warrington 3. Best bloom, Miss J. Warrington 1 Miss A. Williams 2, Miss S. Rayner 3. It was reported that 12 balaclavas had been knitted for soldiers. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames E. Nolan. H. Kirk, J. James and M. Johnston. The singing of the National Anthem brought a pleasant meeting to a close. Personal Items. Mr. W. Mitchell, of Taylor Street, Carterton, underwent a serious operation to an eye at the Greytown Hospital yesterday. Mrs. Alfred King, of Rex wood Street, is the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Robt. McLaren, of Martinborough. Miss Gwen McKenzie, of the nursing staff of the Wellington Public Hospital, is at present on sick leave and is staying with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. McKenzie, High Street. ’ Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Deller, who have been on holiday at Wellington, will return to Carterton tonight.
