MEETING OF MAURICEVILLE COUNCIL NEED FOR STRICT ECONOMY. TO MEET RISING COSTS. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Mauriceville County Council was held yesterday, Mr E. W. Cheetham, chairman, presiding. There were also present Councillors A. Forsberg, A. Gray, C. Welsh, D. Bennett and J. H. MacDonald. The chairman feelingly referred to the great loss which the country had suffered in the death of the late Prime jMinister, Mr Savage, and a resolution jof sympathy was passed, all present standing in silence. A financial report was submitted showing a credit balance of £lOl 5s 10s. Accounts totalling £416 19s lOd were passed. The Masterton County Clerk advised that the amount of heavy traffic fees due to the council for the quarter ending February 29 totalled £5l Is sd. The census office wrote requiring certain information in regard to permits, population, bowser pumps, hoardings, etc, and the clerk reported that he had given the desired information. The matter of the probable necessity to reorganise county work was considered in view of the continued rising cost and it was thought that it would be essential to exercise the strictest economy in order to avoid increasing the general rates, which the council hoped to be able to do at least for the current year, but the question would have to be further considered when the annual estimates were finally dealt with. The overseer reported satisfactory work during the past month and prospective work for the ensuing month was discussed and arranged to be carried out.
