CARTERTON

BOWLING ’ RENOVATING LOCAL GREEN. < — \ ("Times-Age” Special.) The work of scarifying, sowing of seed, rolling and top dressing the Carterton bowling green was proceeded with yesterday, fully half of the green being treated and the remainder should be finished by today. If the seed strike is satisfactory and the green responds to the treatment it has received it should be in good order when the season opens in the last quarter in this year. Mr C. Nicholson, who had been an old bowling green supervisor before coming to Carterton to live, has taken the levels of the green and before next season is opened, there should be considerable improvement in its running surface. The present work is being carried out by the club's green keeper. Mr Priest, and several voluntary workers to whom the club is grateful.

ORDER OF DRUIDS TOTARA LODGE MEETING. A special summoned meeting of the Totara Lodge of Druids was held last evening, when there was a good attendance of members. Bro. H. Murrell. A.D., presiding. Before business was commenced the lodge adjourned for five minutes out of respect, to the memory of the late Prime Minister, the Hon. M. J. Savage. One declaration on the sick fund of the lodge was received and one member declared off the funds. Consideration was given to the proposal of the Grand Lodge officers to transfer £24.000 to the Sick and Funeral Fund of the society to be known as "Soldiers on Active Service Fund." for the payment of contributions of members on active service overseas. The proposal was agreed to. Sick pay and accounts amounting to £lOO 6s 7d, including contributions to Grand Lodge of £B5 9s 3d, were passbed for payment. i<\ Preliminary arrangements were ~'iade in connection with the annual ball and committees were appointed. Discovery of Old Soap. One of the very old residences of Frederick Street, Carterton, built probably 50 years ago and occupied in those days by Mr and Mrs Shutkowski, parents of Mr Frank Shutkowski (who is still a resident of the town) and which is now owned and occupied by Mr Fred Curry, is being remodelled by Mr Williams of Masterton. While removing boards from a back room the discovery was made of two bars of soap bearing the name “Perfection” and with Mr Willie Moore’s name imprinted on the soap. Many old residents will remember the brand "Perfection” made many years ago by the well known Lower Hutt firm of Newton. When the soap was taken from between the outer and the inner wall, whence it had fallen probably 25 or more years ago, it was shrunken up and very hard. One bar of the soap was dropped by Mrs Curry and it broke into three pieces as if it were glass. Mr Willie Moore died in July, 1917, and it was some two or three months after that the business was closed down. Whether the soap can be used remains to be seen. Personal. Mr Thos S. Arcus, of South Carterton, left yesterday afternoon for Wellington where he will stay with his son, Mr Laurie Arcus.
