GREYTOWN

ST LUKE’S CHURCH ANNUAL MEETING OF GUILD. (“Times-Age” Special.) The annual meeting of the St Luke's Ladies’ Guild was held in the Parish Hall. Owing to Mrs York being away in Levin, the meeting was presided over by the Rev Canon Sykes Mrs York wrote stating that she would like to be released from the office of president The election of officers for the year resulted as follows: —President. Miss Kidd; vice-presidents. Mrs Sykes and Mrs Rees; secretary. Mrs C. S. Shedden; hon auditor. Mr W. A. Tate. The annual report and balance sheet were read and adopted. Canon Sykes congratulated the members on their splendid work during the past year. He also stated that the success of the parish was due to a great extent to the work of the Guild. A vote of thanks was passed to the retiring officers. It was decided to hold no further efforts during the war until the need arose for so doing. The secretary was instructed to convey the sympathy of the members to Mesdames W. H. Day and H. T. Rees in their illness. The annual report of the president stated: Following the last annual meeting we had the misfortune to lose the services of Mrs Graham, who for the previous year had been guild secretary and treasurer. This was a tremendous blow, and we placed on record the valuable work she had done for the Guild. In June a "Film Title” evening was held, and proved highly successful. A shop day was held on July 21 and the proceeds were used to help to defray the cost of a new piano for the Parish Hall, the sale of the old piano also helping in this direction. Several individual efforts were made on behalf of stallholders for the Gipsy Fair, these efforts proving that the members were co-operating towards a successful function. The "Gipsy Fair” itself resulted in our finances being increased by £ll5. thus enabling us to reduce the Vicarage loan £2OO during the year, and also to have alterations carried out at the Parish Hall. In March this year we closed our activities for 1939-40 with a garden party. The year’s activities were marked by the very enjoyable monthly meetings. I wish to thank all the members who so willingly worked in every effort during the year, and those who unselfishly gave their time and labour to keep the flowers and brasswork at the church so beautiful; Mr W. A. Tate for auditing the books, and the "Times-Age” and "Standard" for reporting our meetings during the year.
