CARTERTON

BOWLING RINKS CHAMPIONSHIP. ("Tiines-Age” Special.) In anything but suitable weather on the Carterton green on Saturday, Featherston's champion rink proved 'the winners of the centre championship of the Wairarapa. defeating Greytown by a margin of eight points. Rain set in about midday and it looked as if the match would have io be postponed. However, both teams decided to proceed with the game, but it was by nc means a pleasant experience for a time, but the weather improved. At the conclusion of the game, the president of the Centre. Mr Geo Hayne, thanked the Carterton Club for the use of its green which played well under adverse conditions. He congratulated the winners upon their success and also complimented the losers for the good fight they had put up. He also thanked the Rev W. F. Stent for acting as umpire throughout the contest. He called for cheers for the winners, these ■ being lustily given. Afternoon tea was provided by the Carterton Club which was greatly appreciated. The following were the players and scores: Featherston —Davis, James, Higginson, Deas (s) beat Greytown Brown. Kilgour. Curtis. McLeod (s) 22/14.

CARTERTON v DANNEVIRKE. Five rinks of Carterton bowlers journeyed to Dannevirke at the weekend and met a similar number of Dannevirke players. The weather was fine and the trip was enjoyed very much. The visitors are loud in their praise of the hospitality extended to them. Two games were played, one in the morning of 21 heads, and one in the afternoon of 25 heads. When the visitors arrived on the Dannevirke green they were given a cordial welcome by Mr Petherick in the absence of the president for whom an apology was tendered. At the close of the day’s play Mr C. J. DeLacey, on ■ behalf of the visitors, thanked the KDannevirke Club for theii" hospitality. XThe visitors had enjoyed every moment of their play on a beautiful green. The games in the morning, which were taken on a score basis resulted in favour of the home side by 10 points, 87/74. In the afternoon the visitors won by 8 points, 113/105. a margin in favour of Dannevirke by 2 points over both games. Before leaving for home cheers were exchanged. FAREWELL SERMON PREACHED BY REV H. WHITE. The services at the Methodist Church were well attended yesterday, when the Rev H. White preached his farewell sermon to his congregation. Mr White, who has been stationed at Carterton for several years, has made many close friends during that period, and his departure will leave a gap that will be hard to fill. Besides his church activities Mr White has taken a keen interest in the welfare of the town and district generally. He has been interested in the local library, being a valued member of its committee for a long time, was a keen football enthusiast and fostered clean sport in many ways. On Thursday next the congregation of the church will show meir appreciation of his services at a social to be held in the Sunday school. GOLF CARTERTON CLUB. Although the weather conditions were not very pleasant for outdoor sport on Saturday, the Carterton Golf Club season was officially opened on the club's links at the Carterton racecurse. A mixed foursome was played and the following were the best cards handed in—G. S. George and Mrs Murray 69-12-57; S. Hill and Mrs Pointon, 86-26-60; K. Goodin and Miss Lamb, 79-16-63; R. Fisher and Mrs J. Booth. 82-18-64; L. H. Smart and Miss Freer 85-19-66; B. Booth and Miss I. Corlet 81-14-67: H. Colson and Mrs. Candy. 85-16-69. "Parcel Evening.” In honour of the approaching marriage of Miss Lorna Alexander and Mr L. Jensen, a ‘‘parcel evening,” euchre and dance will be held in the Parkvale Hall on Saturday evening next. The popularity of the two young people interested will no doubt be reflected in the large attendance that will be present on the occasion. Personal Items. Constable and Mrs Robertson and their daughter left Carterton today on a holiday. Constable Robertson and the daughter will visit Auckland and Mrs Robertson will spend a holiday with her daughters in Wellington. Miss Pauling, of Carterton, left on Saturday evening by the steamer for Christchurch where she will spend a holiday. Mr J. Hemi. who has been in the Wairarapa since the end of last season’s football activities, will return to Auckland shortly to play for the I,eague Club of which he is a member.
