THE RED CROSS

1 WORK OF COUNTRY DISTRICTS’ SUB-CENTRE. CASES OF CLOTHING SENT TO FINLAND. In October last the Masterton Country Women’s Club decided to try to put new life into the Masterton branch of the New Zealand Red Cross, which was formed some three years ago in response to an appeal by the New Zealand president. Failing in that effort, the representatives of the Country Women’s Club set out to form a Country Districts sub-centre. Spurred on by Finland’s needs and deeds and armed ’with authority from New Zealand headquarters, a large and enthusiastic body of town and country women met on March 13 and formed the 'Masterton Country Districts sub-cen-tre of the New Zealand Red Cross," That day’s sewing resulted in a large packing case of clothing suitable for Finnish refugees being forwarded to Wellington next day. Further meetings have resulted in. a second case going forward. The committee of the subcentre is grateful, to Messrs C. E. Daniell, Ltd., Hugo and Shearer, Ltd., the W.F.C.A., Ltd., and Woolworths Ltd., for help already given, and to other firms which have kindly promised help. Contributions of new anld old clothing and material—especially linen and woollen cast-offs—will be very welcome. Officials and members of the Country Districts sub-centre (of which Mrs A. C. Gawith is president) are glad that a Masterton sub-centre- has now been formed, but intend to maintain their own organisation. This, as may be seen from the particulars given above, is an active group in full working operation. It is considered altogether desirable that other similar groups should be formed to work for the Red Cross. It is felt that this need entail no overlapping, and that an element of healthy rivalry between groups, should it develop, need be in no way harmful.
