Military Enrolments.

Enlistments for overseas service are still coming in freely at the Masterton Defence Office since the appeal for additional men for the Third Echelon was made. The total enlistments to date have now reached 635 for the district. The following is the latest list of recruits: Messrs R. G. Summers, H. D. Nops, R. F. Dorset (Masterton). D. M. Thurston, R. M. Cameron, D. T. Ward, D. J. Bowie (Featherston), and N. Petersen (Eketahuna). Hedgehogs. At the annual meeting of the North Wairarapa sub-committee of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society in Masterion last night, the fact that the general public had little idea of the hedgehog as a pest was stressed by Mr M. A. Rawlins. He stated that if the public were fo understand more fully the depredations of the hedgehogs on bird life, little compunction would be felt in destroying them. It was staled by a member that a bounty of 3d per snout was being paid for hedgehogs. Collection of Metals. With the double purpose of assisting industry and augmenting the National Patriotic Fund, a proposal by the National Patriotic Fund Board to launch a national campaign for the collection of non-ferrous metals has been given the approval of the Minister of Education. Mr Fraser. To ensure the success of the campaign it is essential to have the co-operation of the children in primary and secondary schools, and to this end the board is circularising education boards and governing bodies of secondary technical combined, and private schools. Lead, brass, and copper are in somewhat short supply in industry today, the circular states, and the collection, it is believed, will be of assistance in the Dominion’s industrial fields of activity.
