DEFENCE OF DEMOCRACY. OUTSPOKEN AMERICAN ENVOY. TORONTO, April 1. The United States Minister in Canada. Mr James Cromwell, speaking on "Education for Democracy," criticised those who would destroy human dignity through the enforcement of unquestioning obedience, holding a mirage of superiority before their people to lead them toward the abyss of aggression and conquest. "In a world where propaganda usurps much of education's place one cannot afford to take the ideas of democracy for granted in the battle of ideas which is being fought throughout the world," he said. “Deception and camouflage have been developed to an art as great as war. Words and slogans replace guns, and those who would divest man of every human freedom divert his fears and suspicions with words of false security.
