GREYTOWN
FRUIT PICKING OPERATIONS STOPPED. (“Times-Age” Special.) Owing to the fruit inspector having stopped the picking of the Sturmer apples till April 10, the pickers at the Greytown Fruit Company's orchard were put off at noon on Monday. Personal. Miss G. Alexander, of Christchurch, is the guest of Mrs. G. S. Maloney, McMaster Street. Welcome Rain. The prolonged spell of fine weather broxe last evening and a light rain fell during the night and still continues. The rain is welcomed by farmers and gardeners. HOCKEY GREYTOWN CLUB’S REPORT. In the course of his annual report the president of the Greytown Hockey Club (Mr G. Maloney) states:—lt is unfortunate that for the time being we have so few adults enthusiasts prepared to sacrifice a little time in order to assist the club or the game. If it were only realised how much adult interest contributes to the activities of the youth of a town, we should have no shortage of willing helpers. I can only express the hope that club members themselves will do all they can to bring into the control of the game adults who are willing to render a little service to the community. One feature ■of the year’s activities ought to be commented on particularly and that is the failure to hold regular meetings. This was due, however, to the realisation that so many other; calls were being made upon the boys for night meetings, school work, etc., and that the boys were a homogeneous group at school discussing affairs continually. If, however, we could have secured adult administration as a management committee this very necessary phase of club life should not and would not have been overlooked. The finances will present a reasonably satisfactory position, although considerable expenditure this year will be necessary. The junior boys are in a position to put affairs on a good financial basis and this will assist materially. A good deal of this satisfactory position is to be credited to the, fact that the boys paid their subscriptions—a point which, I regret, some of the preceding year’s adult members overlooked. It. is unfortunate that some members do not realise their responsibility in this direction. I consider the prospects for this year excellent. The spirit is good. We have now gathered together a number - of boys interested in hockey as a game and not merely as the opportunity for a rough and tumble, and, if I may parody the words of a great English statesman, “we have saved hockey in Greytown not only by our efforts but also by our example.” My sincere congratulations and thanks are extended to all who in any way contributed to make 1939 a season of beginnings and of success for the Greytown ‘Club.
