BOVINE TUBERCULOSIS

DISCUSSION AT FARMERS’ UNION. When the testing of dairy cows for tuberculosis was mentioned at today’s meeting of the Wairarapa Provincial Executive of the- Farmers’ Union, Mr. W. J. Thomas expressed the view that the matter should be deferred until after the war, as nothing could be done to deal with this and other diseases unless these were sufficient veterinary surgeons in the country to handle the matter and to provide a general veterinary service. He pointed out that great progress had been made in America in bovine tuberculosis and it had been claimed that the disease had been practically cleaned out in many American States. Mr. H. Bennett stressed the necessity of farmers being paid full compensation for any animals condemned. It was agreed to defer the matter.
