CARTERTON
BOWLING CONTESTS CHAMPION RINK GAMES. ("Tiines-Age” Special.) On Saturday next the Wairarapa champion rink games will be played on the Carterton green. Arrangements are being made for live rinks of Carterton bowlers to visit Dannevirke at the weekend.
. School Holiday. When the local school was ready to break up. yesterday, the children were called together and informed of the death of' the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage, Premier of New Zealand. The headmaster, Mr W. Martin, made suitable reference to the late Mr Savage and the children were told that as a mark of respect there would be no school until Monday, April 1.
Soldiers Return to Camp. Yesterday afternoon’s train carried local soldiers of various units who were en route to Burnham and other long distance camps. There was a fair attendance of the public at the railway station including the Deputy Mayor, Mr E. McKenzie and Mrs McKenzie. Cheers were given for the men as the train moved off. At 5.40 p.m. the north-bound rail-car carried members of the New Zealand Rille Brigade who were going to the Papakura and Ngarawahia camps. These men were also given a rousing send off. The mail train this afternoon wiil carry the remainder of the soldiers back to Trentham. Personal. Dr R N Campbell has undergone an operation at the Bowen Street Hospital and is making satisfactory progress towards recovery. During his absence from Carterton, Dr. Wells is acting ioi him.
Tenders Called for School Work. Tenders are being called by the Wellington Education Board for the installation of a heater in the woodwork room of the Carterton Distnc High School. Tenders will close at noon on April 10. Plans and specifications can be seen at the ‘'Times-Age Office, Masterton.
