RED CROSS APPEAL LOCAL COMMITTEE FORMED. (“Times-Age” Special.) At a meeting held recently a local committee was formed in connection with the-Wellington Provincial Committee of the Joint Council of the Order of St John and N.Z. Red Cross Society. The following officers were elected: —Chairman and treasurer. Mr W. F. Taylor: secretary, Miss N. Greathead. Arrangements are well in hand in connection with the raising of funds for the Red Cross, all of which is to go to the sick, wounded and disabled men of the fighting services. PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH ' SUCCESSFUL SHOP DAY. The shop day conducted by the ladies of the Presbyterian Church on Thursday proved highly successful and the renovation fund will benefit to the extent of approximately £B. The commitee is very grateful for the generous response to their appeal for donations. SOLDIERS ENTERTAINED NIREAHA GATHERING. One of the largest crowds seen at the Nireaha Hall in recent years gathered on Wednesday night to entertain Private J. B. Petersen and Sapper U. S. Wilkin. Dancing was the chief amusement of the evening, and was enjoyed to music supplied by Messrs D. Thompson and N. Liardet Miss Nancy Drysdale contributed an extra. Messrs W. Drysdale and R. Laurence were capable M.'s.C. Mr A. Golder, chairman of the Nireaha Committee, was assisted by Mrs Golder in welcoming the guests and visitors, including many from Pahiatua, Masterton, Eketahuna and the surrounding districts. After supper provided by the ladies of the district, Mr Golder called upon the guests of honour to accept a wristlet watch each from the Nireaha residents. Mr Golder referred to their popularity in the district and wished them Godspeed and a safe return. Messrs A. H. Herbert and T. Hancock, representing the Eketahuna R.S.A., endorsed the remarks of Mr Golder. The recipients were then accorded musical honours, after which they suitably responded, thanking the residents for their good wishes and gift. Messrs J. P. Peterson and E. Wilkin also thanked those assembled for the kindness extended towards their sons.
Dancing was then resumed and continued until a late hour. EKETAHUNA SPORTS ON EASTER MONDAY. A final reminder is given of the Eketahuna Sports to be held on the Alfredton Road Domain on Monday. Excellent entries for all events have been received, and all that is now needed is a fine day to make the event the most successful held for some years. Noted athletes of the Mastertoil Club, including W. Pullar, the New Zealand champion miler, have signified their intention of competing. There will be big fields in the cycling sections. Hot water will be available free to picnic parties, and a stall will be on the ground for the convenience of patrons. A baby show is being conducted by the Plunket Society. All the arrangements have now been completed and those who attend are assured of an excellent day of sport. CRICKET BUSH v. WAIRARAPA. The following have been selected to represent Bush in a match with Wairarapa at Masterton on Monday:— W. Leith, E. Francois. D. Thompson, J. Sandman, K. C. Montgomery, H. Rankin, Bradley, K. Dungan, D. Keen. R. Signal, G. Paget. Twelfth man, E. Staples. Mr C. C. Smyth will accompany the team as manager. Points in the Bush competition to date are as follow: —Eketahuna, 23; Pahiatua, 19; Fire Brigade, 12: Mangamaire, 7; High School. 6. Motor Accident. A sedan car driven by Mr Charles Goss, who was accompanied by Mr Lloyd Goss, capsized at Nireaha on Wednesday. The accident occurred on the road leading from Mr Goss's farm to the main road, and it is understood the car skidded in loose metal. Neither of the occupants were injured, but the car was badly damaged. Personal Items. Mr Alex Lassels,* Nelson, is the guest of Mr 11. Rolls. Alfredton. . Worthington is spending the holidays in Wellington. Mr George Preston is a visitor to the exhibition. Secretary S. Daniel, of the local fire brigade, is attending the U.D.F.B.A. Conference at Upper Hutt. Mr Ivan Hansen. Wellington, is spending Easter with his parents. Mr and Mrs A. Hansen. Stanley Street. Mr C. Wyeth left yesterday on a visit to Wellington. Mr and Mrs H. Price and small daughter will spend the weekend in Wellington. Mr and Mrs E. R. Barr. Palmerston ’ North, are the guests of Mrs P. Mr S. Blewett. Nireaha continues to make good progress toward recovery after his recent severe illness. Misses Amy Pike and Jansen and Mr Norman Green. Wellington, are the guests of Mr and Mrs W. Green, Stanley Street, for Easter. Miss G. Hooper and Corporal B. Browne, Wellington, are the guests of Mr and Mrs F. Hooper, Stanley Street. Miss J. Neiderer is visiting South Wairarapa for the holidays. Mi- E. Neiderer, Nireaha. is a weekend visitor to Wellington. A Heavy Gale. Eketahuna and district was swept by a heavy north-westerly gale on Thursday afternoon and evening. The electric power supply was disorganised due. it is believed, to a heavy tree falling across the power lines at Mauriceville. There was also interruption on the telegraph lines. Several fences and gates in the borough were blown down. A car shed belonging to Mr W. Goss, of Nireaha, was destroyed, but fortunately the car was in town at the time.
