Mr Justice Hawke said last month at Reading Assizes: “I am not one of those who think the possibility of inflicting corporal punishment should be denied to judges. It is essential that respectable women should be protected.” He sentenced Burdis William Redford, forty-two-year-old navvy, of London Street, Reading, to fifteen months’ hard labour for robbing with violence Mrs Gladys Kathleen Smith, licensee of a publichouse.
