STATE THEATRE

“HERE I AM A STRANGER.” “Here I Am A Stranger” will be shown tonight at the State Theatre, with Richard Greene in his first great starring role. Greene far surpasses his triumph in “Kentucky"—as a youth who meets life and love for the first time., faces a father he had never known, and finds himself a stranger in the world he had grown up into. He meets romance with lovely Brenda Joyce, Darryl F. Zanuck’s sensational discovery fresh from her success in “The Rains Came.” Featured at the top of a great acting cast is Richard Dix in another dramatic conquest, as the man who beat every game but life —the father who lost and found a son. Offering the finest portrayals of their careers, the splendid cast also includes Roland Young. Gladys George, Katharine Aldridge, Russell Gleason, George Zucco, Edward Norris and Henry Kolker. It is a great emotional picture that will definitely take a high place among the screen’s unforgettable achievements. The story opens with Clara Allen’s leaving her irresponsible husband, Duke, because he cannot care for their infant son, David, in the manner in which she hopes to rear him. She manages to marry a wealthy man who gives her son security and a fine education. How David rediscovers his father and helps rehabilitate him is unfolded with real dramatic punch. SCUTTLING OF GRAF SPEE. A special attraction will be a British Theatre on Saturday will be a British Gaumont Newsreel, 1000 feet in length, showing authentic and awe-inspiring pictures of the scuttling of the German Pocket Battleship, Graf Spee. This complete air survey shows the Graf Spee in Montivideo Harbour, the unloading of the dead and wounded German sailors, and interesting close-ups of the German commander who afterwards shot himself. The action shots of the scuttling are excellent. Explosion after explosion rent the air and in a short time the mighty four million pound enemy battleship was cn fire from end to end. Graphic breath-taking pictures show the vessel with a thick pall of black smoke hovering over her, as she slips from the sight of the thousands of people on the shore to her final resting place. To the captains and crews of the Exeter, Ajax and the Achilles must go the credit for this great naval victory. This newsreel will be of special interest to Wairarapa audiences owing to the number of local men who participated in the engagement.
